Colombo, 13 December, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka Army Commander vows to drive the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam out of the Eastern province shortly. "This would help the people in the East to lead their lives peacefully," Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, according to a report has told the media.

The report reveals that the strength of the LTTE has been weakened since the Karuna faction broke away in March 2004.

The report pointed out that, this was not the first instance the LTTE has lost its hold in the Eastern province. During the period 1993 – 1994, LTTE influence was swept away under Brigadier Lucky Algama, then Commander of the Eastern province.

A report published by Media Centre for National Security revealed since the past two weeks the LTTE using the people in the Kadiraveli area as "human shields" and continuously fired artillery and mortars at the Security Forces.

The report further revealed that the people who have had to bear the brunt of these artillery and mortars attacks have been forced to leave their homes and villages and seek safety in the areas controlled by the Security Forces. As a result of these terrorist activities, the report adds, during the period 01.12.2006 until today (13), 4028 persons including of 2947 children have arrived into areas controlled by the Security Forces. Of these children, 319 are below 05 years of age. They have been accommodated in camps for the Internally Displaced. Besides them, due to the artillery and mortar attacks of the LTTE on schools, the hospitals and villages another 3210 have been displaced.

Sri Lanka President according to Media Centre for National Security has recently announced that the Security Forces have required resources and the strength to counter terrorism. It further adds that this capability of the Forces to defeat the terrorists was amply demonstrated in the past few days in the Eastern province. The Security Forces defeated the LTTE in Sampur when they resorted to use the people as 'human shields' and were able to release the people from the clutches of the LTTE, said the report.

The Army Commander pointed out, "The LTTE terrorists who escaped from Sampur have now retreated to Vakarai and Kadiraveli and are harassing the people firing artillery and mortars at the Security Forces." However these terrorists, according to the Commander of the Army, are retreating, while two lines of their FDL's have been overrun by the Security Forces.
