Mumbai will host the 2011 cricket World Cup final. World cup 2011 is to be jointly organised by India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The two semi-finals of the mega event would be held at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan.

Ok, it makes commercial and marketing sense to host the final of the mega event in Mumbai. Beacuse we know, no matter which teams qualify for the final, there will be a house full show as usual in ODI's played in any Indian city. And the amount of dollars put in by sponsors would be massive, since it's being played in South Asia's most popular city. Bollywood.

But, we Sri Lankan cricket fans had some faint hopes, that the 2011 final would be held in Colombo. Because last 2 times when the world cup was hosted by sub continent, the final went to India (1987) and Pakistan (1996) respectively, so it's fair for some one to hope that next time it should go to Sri Lanka.
Knowing that, Sri Lanka is a stronger Cricketing nation today, compared to the run-up to the world cups 1987 and 1996, both in experience, facilities and finance it make more sense to host the final in a "new venue" this time.
And, knowing Sri Lanka wouldn't be able to host a complete Cricket world cup in next century or so, this would be our best opportunity to host the mega event of a world cup.

We know the bargaining power of BCCI is higher than SLC or PCB. The committee who took these decisions was dominated by Indians, and SLC CEO Duleep Mendis was the only Sri Lankan to be there. But I highly doubt, the representative from SLC did at least a smallest of attempts to get the final to Colombo. If he did so, I'm sure Pakistan would be backing up Sri Lanka knowing the amount of support their cricketers get from some Sri Lankan fans in Colombo.
In fact, Pakistan would be delighted to play in Sri Lanka, than in India if they are qualified for a world cup final. Don't worry about the B'desh vote. It goes in the direction of Pakistan all the time!

The meeting, held at the residence of the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) president Sharad Pawar, also decided that the inaugural function of the tournament will be hosted by Bangladesh, which would also conduct the opening tie at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

Apart from Pawar, others who attended the meeting were Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket Duleep Mendis, CEO of Bangladesh Cricket Board Mehboob Rehman, former BCCI president Inderjit Singh Bindra, secretary Niranjan Shah, joint secretary M P Pandove and Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty.
