View Full Version : Sri Lankan director grabs "Silver Pyramid Award" at 30th Cairo International Film Fes

Prasanna Jayakody of Sri Lanka has won the Special Jury Prize, the Silver Pyramid Award, awarded to the best director at the 30th Cairo International Film Festival.

Mr. Jayakody competed with directors from 18 countries with his film, "Sankara".

"Sankara" has become a highly discussed movie among both national and international critics.

Expressing their impression of they what they called "a poetry recited over a collection of striking images", the members of the jury congratulated Mr. Jayakody over his talented direction. It was also mentioned by Jury Member Assad Fouladhakar that Mr. Jayakody had excellently blended the essence of music and sounds and the cinematography in his work.

Speaking at a press conference after the screening of the film, Mr. Jayakody said that through "Sankara", he tried to explore the spirituality and intellectuality of one's mind. Responding to questions by journalists on the use of music and images, he also said he believes the life of the human being, in particular the movements of the mind, cannot be expressed through dialogue. Therefore he used a more powerful media of sounds, silence and images to portray the desires and passions of the mind.

Prasanna Jayakody's debut film "Sankara" competed in the competition section of the 30th Cairo Film Festival, held from 28 November to 8 December in Cairo. The Cairo Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world.

Mr. Jayakody was accompanied by cinematographer Palitha Perera and music composer Nadeeka Guruge at the festival. The Sri Lanka Embassy in Cairo coordinated Sri Lanka's participation in the event. City Bank Card, Chase low rate loan, American Express
