A minor explosion has occurred at Gas Paha junction in Colombo short while ago. Police suspect a hand grenade has been exploded by an unknown party. According to the available information few people have suffered injuries in the explosion.

Underworld gang involved in Pettah blast, six injured: Brig Nanayakkara

(UPDATE 2) - The grenade explosion in which six persons were injured in Pettah was an incident involving underworld gang membes, militry spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said.

He said the explosion had gone off under a car causing damage to the vehicle.

"We can ruleout that it was an incident involving the LTTE", he said.

Earlier residents said a loud sound was heard and ambulances and fire brigade was heard rushing to the area.

Eyewitnesses said that about 10 persons had been injured.

September 08, Colombo: A bomb exploded little while ago at the Gas Works Junction of the Seas Street in Colombo 11, Sri Lanka.

According to Senior Superintendant of Police, Ranagala, injured have being admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. The explosion is suspected to be from a hand grenade damaging a motor vehicle and staring some windows in the vicinity. National Hospital Colombo, Director Hector Weerasinghe confirmed that 9 persons have been admitted to the hospital.
