Windows ReadyBoost

This feature is included in the following editions of Windows Vista:

http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033%5Cwindows/images/check_basic.gif Home Basic (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/home-basic.aspx)

http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033%5Cwindows/images/check_premium.gif Home Premium (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/home-premium.aspx)

http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033%5Cwindows/images/check_business.gif Business (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/business.aspx)

http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033%5Cwindows/images/check_ultimate.gif Ultimate (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/ultimate.aspx)

(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx)

Adding system memory (typically referred to as RAM) is often the best way to improve a PC's performance, since more memory means more applications are ready to run without accessing the hard drive. However, upgrading memory can be difficult and costly, and some machines have limited memory expansion capabilities, making it impossible to add RAM.
Windows Vista introduces Windows ReadyBoost, a new concept in adding memory to a system. You can use non-volatile flash memory, such as that on a universal serial bus (USB) flash drive, to improve performance without having to add additional memory "under the hood."

Enhanced for Windows® ReadyBoost™ *

*Please check the package for ReadyBoost logo, NOT all flash drives support ReadyBoost.

* Supercharge Your PC’s Performance With SanDisk USB Flash Drives
* How ReadyBoost Technology Works
* The Choice Is Yours
* Your Data Is Always Safe and Secure
* The More Flash Memory, the Bigger the Boost

Supercharge Your PC’s Performance With SanDisk USB Flash Drives
Running Windows Vista? Then you can use a SanDisk “Enhanced for ReadyBoost” USB Flash Drive to improve your PC’s performance – without the hassle and expense of installing additional RAM (Random Access Memory) in your system. And you can still use the flash drive for file storage as usual.

How ReadyBoost Technology Works
ReadyBoost allows your PC to use any “Enhanced for ReadyBoost” flash drive as additional memory. In effect, the flash drive becomes an extension of your system’s RAM. Because applications can retrieve data from the flash drive more quickly than from your PC’s hard drive, your system responds faster and runs better.

The Choice Is Yours
When you plug in any “Enhanced for ReadyBoost” flash drive, Windows Vista gives you the option of using the drive to speed up your system or as storage only:

You may then choose how much of the drive’s memory you want to use as system memory and how much you want to reserve for file storage:

Your Data Is Always Safe and Secure
With ReadyBoost, data stored on a flash drive to boost system performance is also backed up on your PC’s hard drive. You can remove the flash drive any time without losing any information or harming your system. Also, all data stored on the flash drive is encrypted, so it can’t be accessed or tampered with if the drive falls into someone else’s hands.

The More Flash Memory, the Bigger the Boost
To take advantage of ReadyBoost, you need at least 1GB of free memory on a flash drive, and ReadyBoost can take advantage of up to 4GB. That’s why, if you’re running Windows Vista, it’s a good idea to use higher-capacity flash drives – so you’ll have plenty of memory for ReadyBoost, and plenty for your file storage.

Flash drives are not slow for this purpose. Do you know how slow hard disks are at "random accessing"? They are very very very slow. What you see as 80MBps or so are just sequential transfer rates of large files. We need low access times than high transfer rates for our purpose.

A typical 7200RPM drive will have access times around 12-15ms. A good flash drive will have it at 0.5ms. RAM will have it at 1ns or less.

And remember this does not increase the amount of RAM installed in the system, NOT EVEN VIRTUAL MEMORY!!! This is just to supplement the pagefile on hard disk. The paging executable writes to both the flash drive and hard disk, and reads from the flash drive if the data is in it, if not goes to the hard disk, just as how the caching on the CPU works. (Cache is a duplication of data on RAM, not an addition)

that is impossible...........
USB only can handle so much data transfer...............
so how the hell USB pen can help to increase the PC's RAM.............

if it to pull off...the USB transfer rates shroud be much MUCH more than what is now available......

This is only for Vista & your Pen Drive must be a Ready Boost Support usb pen.. otherwise it won't support to increase u virtual memory... coz it needs faster read write speed than da normal pen drive's

Not Supported pen drives to Vista Ready Boost by Kingston - DT100 / DT110 / DT101 / DTI / Mini Fun / Mini Migo / Mini Slim

Supported Kingston Pen drives - DT400 / DataTraveler BlackBox / DataTraveler Locker / DataTraveler HyperX & the high end data travelers

Data transfer rates are not important for this purpose. Access times are the critical. But of course you need somewhat OK level of transfer speed.

A good flash drive should be able to reach 30MBps+. Mine does 25-28MBps.
