Tenchu: Time of the Assassins PSP

This PSP entry in the series has you as ninjitsu masters Ayane and Rikumaru in an all-new storyline that takes place immediately following the events of Tenchu: Fatal Shadows. Each character is tied to a different story, and each story offers different levels to play through. In addition to the scenario mode, there is also a 'free mission' mode that's comprised of 50 independent missions to enjoy after you have completed the single-player campaign.

From Software resurrects the mission creation mode from Tenchu II for this handheld edition, allowing you to create your own maps, complete with enemies. These can be saved to Memory Stick for exchange with friends. Players can also engage in cooperative and competitive multiplayer play with multiple selectable characters, both through wireless LAN and USB cable

When it was released earlier this year, Tom Clancy's GRAW 2 was an evolution of the franchise. Improved controls, smoother gameplay and a deep multiplayer experience added up to make an incredible first person shooter. The port of the title over to the PS3 was impressive as well, which merely added to the legacy of the franchise. With the release on the PSP, you'd expect Captain Mitchell's portable sorties to be just as impressive as his console adventures. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 on the PSP is barely GRAW in any sense of the word, which should be extremely disappointing for fans of the series.

GRAW 2 PSP isn't a condensed version of the console game onto the UMD, nor does it pick up where the console version leaves off. Instead, the plot is designed to be "GRAW 1.5." Shortly after the events of the first GRAW, Mitchell is tasked with following the weapons used in Mexico City, which takes him to Columbia. Unfortunately, as he and his team are being inserted into the country, the helicopter that he's on is shot down, leaving him alone behind enemy territory. To successfully accomplish his mission, Mitchell will need to follow his attackers and the weapons he was sent for, uncovering a conspiratorial twist that could drag all Mexico and all of Latin America into a new conflict.

MLB 07’s game modes will be familiar to anyone who played last year’s game, and it’s remarkably similar to the PS2 version, though you will have to contend with some lengthy load times. You can play a quick game, call the shots in manager mode, hop online, embark on a career, play multiple seasons, take part in a home-run derby, or try to become king of the diamond. The king-of-the-diamond mode is a timed game where you pick a pitcher and hitter and duel the opposing team on a field that’s filled with obstacles and targets that penalize or reward you for where you hit the ball. It’s not all that deep, but it’s a fun diversion if you’re looking to play a quick, stress-free game. Franchise mode is still missing in action, but the game does have a season mode. You’ll be able to play or simulate games, trade players, sign free agents, and this year, you can edit your player rosters, as well as download new ones. You can even jump out of a game you’ve already begun and simulate it, which is one of the PS2 version’s interesting features.

The BIGS has a lot in common with Midway’s Slugfest series; the games move along at a brisk pace and there are plenty of gargantuan home runs, as well as some absolutely filthy pitches. On the mound, each of your pitches is mapped to a face button on the controller. To throw a pitch, you simply press the corresponding button and hold it until you’ve gone past the mark on the meter. If you wait too long or release too early, your location will be off and you’ll tip your pitch to the batter. Each pitch is rated according to the pitcher’s ability to throw it. This ability decreases as the game goes on, but the change can be accelerated by giving up hits. The harder the pitch is hit, the less effective it will be, and eventually, you’ll lose the ability to throw the pitch completely. This isn’t a huge problem when playing a single game because you’ve got plenty of pitchers at your disposal, but it’s an issue in rookie challenge because a pitcher’s stamina level carries over from game to game

justice League Heroes (PSP)

Justice League Heroes uses the same basic technology that powered Snowblind Studios’ first real hit, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, though in the process of scaling down to the PSP hardware it’s lost some of the finer graphical details. Justice League Heroes still has a really clean look to it. The environments, while relatively small, cover a wide range of locations. Though there’s not a terrific variety of enemies within each level, the enemies you’ll face change as you travel to new areas. The overhead camera perspective keeps the action from feeling as grand as you might expect from this band of superheroes, some of the outdoor environments look a little grainy, and the occasional overuse of light and particle effects can create a little slowdown. At this point, it’s not going to blow anyone’s mind, but Justice League Heroes looks well put together.

Parappa The Rapper (PSP)

Playing PaRappa the Rapper in 2007 is a little bit like trying to fight in a modern war with an ancient spear you dug up out of some archeological site. The game is a relic of a time when rhythm games were just trying to get their footing. It’s far more interesting as something to look back on than it is something to play in an age when the rhythm genre has gone and leapt several tall buildings from where it was a decade ago. So it’s a bit curious that PaRappa would see a release as a proper $30 PSP game as opposed to a cheaper PlayStation Network download, which has been the case with several other notable PS games. The added content in the form of a tacked-on multiplayer mode and some downloadable remixes isn’t enough to justify the price tag either, so what you’re left with is an overly expensive curiosity from the past that probably won’t hold your attention for terribly long

Pirates of Caribbean At World’s End (PSP)

According to Major Nelson’s blog, Disney Interactive Studios and Microsoft have decided that gamers have gone long enough without a Pirates of the Caribbean demo. As such, a sample of the first level of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End is now available for download via the Xbox Live Marketplace. Unfortunately, the demo is only available for European Xbox 360 owners at the moment.

At World’s End takes its cue from the upcoming movie of the same name, featuring events, environments, and characters from the feature film. The game allows players to step into the swashbuckling boots of Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann, as they strive to keep Jack’s dark past from getting the best of him.
The full game is due out May 22, but this demo level is available now. What are you waiting for? Get out there and get pirating.

Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai brings Atari and Dimps' successful anime-inspired fighting series to the PlayStation Portable in a package that isn't particularly ambitious but is still well-executed enough to make it worthwhile. The simple, fast-paced action of the Budokai series translates well onto the PSP, and the presentation is both eye-catchingly vibrant and technically flashy. Shin Budokai's bare-bones set of features is in stark relief against the game's solid core and is a little disappointing.
That Shin Budokai takes its cues from the first three Budokai games, and not Budokai Tenkaichi, should be a great relief to fans. Like its predecessors, Shin Budokai takes a basic 3D fighting game model and imbues it with the hyperkinetic energy synonymous with Dragon Ball Z. The game's controls map easily onto the PSP, using two of the face buttons for melee attacks, one for blocking attacks, and one for firing off ranged energy attacks. As you might expect, melee attacks can be easily strung into combos, and pressing both at once lets you throw your opponent. Holding down the block button puts your character's guard up, though well-timed taps on the block button can dodge an attack entirely or even throw an energy attack right back at your opponent.

The Hustle: Detroit Streets is the best pool game available for the PSP. Though, that is true only because it's the only pool game available for the PSP. Still, The Hustle isn't a bad game of billiards on its own merits. Developer Blade Interactive has had some experience with the game of pool, as it has developed a couple of console and PC pool and snooker titles in the past. With The Hustle, Blade has eschewed the standard tournament style of play in favor of a grittier, slicker style of game. Here you'll play as a pool hustler, down on his or her luck, working your way through the seedy pool halls of Detroit, trying to regain your bankroll and your rep. Unfortunately, the whole story aspect is just kind of stupid, and it just gets in the way of the best parts--namely, the pool itself. It's also a tough game to sit through at some moments, as the load times and transitions between shots take what feels like an eternity. But if you can look past these admittedly serious faults, you might find The Hustle to be a game worth looking at.
When you first boot up The Hustle, you quickly toss together a basic profile and character to represent yourself. There's some backstory here about your character's rise and fall from grace, but it's all meaningless filler. It's just an excuse to put you on track to play a lot of pool against a lot of seedy characters. You don't have to work especially hard to make that happen. Just plop yourself down in the first available pool hall and start challenging and accepting challenges from the roustabouts that occupy the building. You start out with only a few available challengers, and as you win more money and earn more respect (which is actually measured via a numbered percentage), more opportunities will open up.
