The Security Forces found bunkers constructed and abandoned by the LTTE between Kadjuwatte and Panichchankerni in the Batticaloa District with canopies supplied by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) being used by the LTTE terrorists as shelter for their bunkers.
The military spokesperson Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said that the LTTE terrorists are using relief aid sent for the displaced people in Vakarai and the security forces have evidence to prove it.
He said that the security forces found evidence when last week they captured the LTTE Forward Defence Line (FDL) in Kadjuwatte and Panichchankerni areas - South of Vakarai.
"During the security forces' limited counter operation in these areas, security forces found tents and canopies with UNHCR markings, being used by the LTTE terrorists, as shelter for their bunkers. Some canopies were filled with sand to build bunkers," the spokesperson further said.
The security forces had also found a large stock of arms and ammunition in Kadjuwatta and Panichchankerni in abandoned bunkers, after the LTTE escaped using human shields." Already about 4,028 persons, including of 2,947 children, have entered Government controlled areas, seeking protection from the Security Forces," Brig Samarasinghe added.
