(Lanka-e-News, October 06, 2008, 12.40 PM) At least twenty two persons including North Central Provincial Council Opposition Leader Retired Major General Janaka Perera, his wife, United National Party (UNP) Anuradhapura district manager Johnpulle and his wife were killed this morning (06) in an explosion that took place in Anuradhapura.
Army media spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that Provincial Councilor Sunil Disanayaka was also among the killed.
According to sources in Anuradhapura hospital, the number of injured are at least 59. Mohammed Rizvi said that his brother who is a Sirasa journalist, his sister and brother in law were also killed in the blast.
The explosion took place in Mr. Janaka Perera’s office this morning.
Janaka Perera who contested as the leader of the UNP team for the North Central Provincial Council achieved the highest number of preferential votes. There were security issues in relation to him since the beginning of the election campaign and he had to go to courts to obtain security since adequate safety was not provided to him.
Late Mr. Johnpulle is a victim of post election violence since the mobs caused over Rs. fifty million damage to his property on the day of the election for the North Central Province. A fundamental rights petition is being heard in the courts pertaining to this incident and a number of the defendants of the case are police officers.
Also Sirasa News First Anuradhapura Regional Reporter Maharoof Mohommed Rasmi is also died in this incident.
