Cabinet portfolio’s to reduce to 35
By Ajantha Kumara Agalakada
The cabinet reshuffle that is expected to take place soon could see the number of ministries limited to thirty five, government sources said adding that ministries will only be allocated the main portfolios and additional subjects relevant to them will also be included in them.
At present ministries cannot function properly as various subjects have been linked to the main subject areas and in order to avoid overlapping of duties it is expected that as it was done earlier cabinet ministries will be limited to 35 and the non cabinet ministries to 10. A three member committee will be appointed by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa to come up with suggestions regarding the cabinet reshuffle.

Senate panel OKs Gates as Defense secretary
Robert Gates spent 27 years in the CIA, served on corporate boards and did a stint as a presidential national security adviser. But those who know Gates say his most recent job as president of Texas A&M University may have been the best test of the skills he'll need to succeed.
Robert Gates, President Bush's choice as the next Defense secretary, will have to act fast — within months, analysts and retired officers say — to effect change at the Pentagon and in Iraq.
Hearings on Gates' nomination are scheduled to begin Tuesday before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Nobody has announced opposition to Gates, the 63-year-old president of Texas A&M University. He led the CIA from 1991 until early 1993.

Dell recalled 4.1 million batteries worldwide
A heatproof battery for laptops, which could help solve recent problems with overheating, is to be mass produced by Japanese firm Matsushita.
It follows a series of incidents where batteries overheated or caught fire.
Sony has had to recall millions of laptop batteries in the last year and Matsushita and Sanyo also have had problems with overheating.
Matsushita has added a heat resistant layer to its lithium ion batteries and plans to step up mass production.
The company behind the Panasonic brand plans to produce five million units per month, up from 100,000 a month when the heat resistant batteries began shipping in April.
