a = 1
b = 1

a = b
a2 = b2
a2 - b2 = 0
(a-b)(a+b) = 0
(a-b)(a+b)/(a-b) = 0/(a-b)
1(a+b) = 0
(a+b) = 0
1 + 1 = 0
2 = 0

Now let's divide both sides by 2, and we get:

1 = 0

Now add 1 to each side (1+1 = 0+1) then you'll get:

1 + 1 = 1

Someone Already proved it before me! Nice!

Assume x=1 and y =1
therefore : x=y
so : x^2 = y^2 - squares of equal numbers are also equal
therefore : x^2-y^2 = 0 - substract y^2 from both sides
which means : (x-y)*(x+y)=0
therefore : (x-y)*(x+y)/(x-y)=0/(x-y) - divide both sides by (x-y)
thus : 1 * (x+y) = 0
so : x+y =0
since x=1 and y=1 : 1+1 =0
thus : 2= 0
therfore : 2/2 = 0 /2 - divide both sides by 2
thus : 1 = 0
by adding 1 to both sides : 1+1 = 0+1
thus : 1+1=1

Now can someone point out the fallacy in the method of how 1+1=1 was proved ?

kalanaweerlk
10-11-2008, 07:09 PM
a = 1
b = 1

a = b
a2 = b2
a2 - b2 = 0
(a-b)(a+b) = 0
(a-b)(a+b)/(a-b) = 0/(a-b)
1(a+b) = 0
(a+b) = 0
1 + 1 = 0
2 = 0

Now let's divide both sides by 2, and we get:

1 = 0

Now add 1 to each side (1+1 = 0+1) then you'll get:

1 + 1 = 1

~Z~

u have composed this answer very cleverly n clearly :yes:
problem solved

but just to show how dis step happened ;) to those who didn't understand dis

a2 - b2 = 0
(a-b)(a+b) = 0

(a-b)(a+b)=a2+ab-ab-b2
=a2-b2

so, (a-b)(a+b)=a2-b2

Well , then you can continue by showing the fallacy in the method used to prove that 1+1=1

x-y = 1-1 becomes 0 right?

If you divide any number by 0, it becomes infinity ;) hehe just playing with the symbols :rofl:

And according to mathematical theories, you cant equalise 2 different equations to zero. Because 0 != 0 ;)

(Well.. I did Bio for A/Ls so not too sure :rofl:)

You cant divide both sides of an equation by zero..:)

a-b = 0

So this part is wrong.. (a-b)(a+b)/(a-b) = 0/(a-b)

Exactly! and that's the fallacy in this method of proving.
You cannot divide both sided of the equation by 0.

BTW, if memory serves, this is O/L math that's being used here. Not A/L math.

there is small mistake dudez....

a = 1
b = 1

a = b
a2 = b2
a2 - b2 = 0
(a-b)(a+b) = 0
(a-b)(a+b)/(a-b) = 0/(a-b)
1(a+b) = 0
(a+b) = 0
1 + 1 = 0
2 = 0

Now let's divide both sides by 2, and we get:

1 = 0

Now add 1 to each side (1+1 = 0+1) then you'll get:

1 + 1 = 1

~Z~

that highlighted line cant b tru guys...

v cant simplyfy according 2 this.....

if a=b,that means a-b=0

so v cant dived zero by a-b....

if v r doing that is mistake,,,
