Hi firstly, good luck with your research :)

So I'd like to draw some attention to some areas that are relatively new and gaining momentum in the traditional e-commerce platforms like Amazon, e-bay, tiger direct etc. etc.

You may have heard about SaaS (which stands for Software as a Service) this actually a business model that is very successful, in lemans terms SaaS is actually a centralized software that's being used by many users across many platforms..this "many users" could belong to many companies, even many countries regardless of their physical location they use a centralized software which has been developed taking into consideration of common domain areas...

Advantages of this model is that the cost factor is less, the user does not need to bear the cost of developing, maintaining and even hardware required to run the application.. that's all taken are of.. while users pay a monthly fee as per use and as per head!

And it is also highly profitable business because you only write that application once (and keep improving it ofcourse) and its software so there's no other headaches such as stocking, shipping.. etc. easier to manage!

One good example of this is http://www.salesforce.com/ please go through this site and you can understand the business model and the application its a CRM application that any organization can use, and there are other opensource applications out there that does the same too..

This model can and already applied to many other domains already and moving ever so fast as another aspect of e-commerce..

So I hope my 2 cents might have helped you in some way.. if you interested type SaaS and google.. you'll get ton of information about this!
