Choose the best drive you have from the poll options.

I have a Sony DRU-810A crossflashed to a Benq DW1640 in my current PC.

In my old PC, which my dad currently uses, I have:
1. Gigabyte GO-W1608A crossflashed to a Liteon SOHW-1653S
2. Benq 48x12x48x CDRW (can't remember the model)

Seems like most people have DVDRW drives these days. Anyway, there's no point buying even a combo drive because DVDRW drives are very cheap.

Ok, I'm not laughing at the 5th one

Anyway, can you do me a favour? If you have burned any Sony discs, can you show me a quality scan of one? You can use Nero CD Speed to do that. Since Sony doesn't support the real quality scanning thing, you can use the Transfer test and show us the final graph output.

Low price? Nope. I mean, even theoretically it's not possible. Sony don't make DVDRW drives. They hire others to make it for them. Here, others means other companies who sell their own burners. So the Sony drives can't be cheaper than the OEM's drives, neigher same price.

Believe me when I say Sony doesn't make DVDRWs. It looks like the Sony DRU-830A is a rebadged Benq DW1800.

Sony DRU-720A = Liteon SOHW-1673S

Samsung's SH-S183L is an 18x DVD-writing drive... this one use SATA rather than the parallel data-transfer interface that currently prevails. The industry shift to SATA optical drives mean more SATA connections will be required on PC motherboards.

If you have to make a decision between a Benq drive and a Sony drive, Benq is the way to go. They have a lot of features which are disabled in the Sony's. But you can of course crossflash them to the original Benq model to unlock those features.

On all new boards, there are at least 4 or 6 or 7 SATA connectors and only 1 IDE connector. So this will not be a problem. However, I don't see why we need SATA optical drives. The transfer speeds of optical drives are nowhere near even ATA33 speeds.

Yeah, yeah. Now the difference is negligible. When I bought my DRU-810A, it cost me Rs.7,250 here. It was around US$59.99 in USA. The OEM drive, Benq DW1640 was onlt US$49.99. They didn't have the Benq drives at that time.

True. But that's a bit extreme. They at least make few parts. Here, they only make their sticker, drive bezel and firmware. Looks like they aren't doing anything at all - even the firmware is not built by them from the scratch.

yep,i dont care who puts that out,if customers get the best..

But the thing is, it's not the best. I mean, Sony's firmware support isn't that great. For my drive, they have only released 5 versions. Benq have released about 10 (they are not bug fixes; they are burn quality improvements and expansion in supported media IDs)

They are cheap, but not that cheap. They are around US$30. But the thing is, the NEC 3540 and Benq 1640 are considered the best DVD burners to set foot on earth. Feature wise, the newer ones are superior, but final output quality wise the quality of those two drives is pretty much the best it can get.

SONY UNVEILS FIRST BLU-RAY DISC DRIVE BURNER
Burns up to 50GB of Data and Keeps Video in Native HDV 1080i
http://www.sony-asia.com/storage/images/BWU_100A.jpg
MUMBAI, INDIA, August 25, 2006 - Sony Electronics (S) Pte Ltd today unveiled its first internal Blu-Ray Disc™ (BD) rewritable drive for the computer aftermarket.

The new drive (model BWU-100A) supports up to 50GB of data on BD-R (write once) or BD-RE (rewritable) discs or up to four hours of high-definition video using HDV 1080i on a BD-RE 50GB disc. The new drive is capable of burning a full 25GB disc in about 50 minutes.

For personal content captured on a HDV camcorder, the BD drive is optimized for keeping the video in the native HDV 1080i for playback on home players compatible with BD-AV format and PCs with BD drives installed.

Sony's BD drive also supports recording of standard single layer 4.7GB DVD±R/±RW/RAM discs, 8.5GB DVD±R Double/Dual Layer Discs, and CDs, making it a multi-format burner.

"Sony continues to entice with its technology by introducing the much awaited Blu-ray drive which converges the requirement of higher storing capacity and superior quality. Sony's success and leading position for DVD writers in India attributes to our abilities to deliver first to market products. Enthusiasts can now store high definition videos and also read/write on normal DVDs & CDs and all this with just one drive" said Vincent Chng, Head and Regional Sales & Marketing Department for branded storage products in Application & Devices Marketing (Singapore) (a division company of Sony Electronics (S) Pte Ltd).

The BWU-100A is capable of playing back commercial Blu-ray movies as well as personally created Blu-ray content. Commercial Blu-ray movies can be viewed on computers that incorporate an HDCP-compliant graphics card offering DVI or HDMI connections, HDCP-compliant computer display, and software that supports BD-ROM playback, along with the Blu-ray drive itself.

The BWU-100A drive comes bundled with the CyberLink BD Solution® from Cyberlink Corporation, which provides a complete software application for capturing, authoring, editing and burning high-definition personal content captured by a HDV 1080i format camcorder onto BD discs. Video can also be "down-converted" to standard-definition resolution for burning onto DVDs.

The internal drive features an IDE (ATA/ATAPI) interface and standard 5.25-inch form factor for easy installation inside a PC.

My congrats on ur goodie..cooooolll....
But u knw, guys here in SL cant afford their prize and they rnt even available here at local shops....:(:(

Even if I could afford them, I wouldn't buy them. Bruray has just emerged and it will take quite a while for them to mature. The write quality, media support etc. will improve over the years and faster drives will come out too. DVDRW drives have saturated in feature right now. 18X drives are there, but that's a small speed upgrade from 16X.

In about 2 years, Bruray or HD-DVD drives will become mainstream, and in another year or so, they will become quite affordable. Besides, who needs so much capacity right now?

Nevertheless, it's nice to see someone who has a Bluray drive.

That 2 year old burner is a Gigabye GO-W1608A which I got converted to a Liteon SOHW-1653S (because it's a rebadged Liteon drive). I paid Rs.13,500 for that!! :(

My current burner is a Sony DRU-810A which I got converted to a Benq DW1640 (because it's a rebadged Benq drive which has more features than the Sony). I paid Rs.7,500 for it (it's more than a year old as well).

Oh don't buy a Samsung. They aren't in the top of the list. Besidses, their drives are made by Toshiba I think.

yep, they make them with toshiba.I think they r good , but at other electronics.Usually samsung brings up the moddest or fastest RAMs and sell the technology i think.Or they mostly sell the chips..

Anusha
12-31-2006, 09:32 PM
They are the ones to bring the latest stuff with RAM, but IMO, they are not good at maturing a technology to the maximum.

yes, they leave it quickly 4 others to develop and start a whole new thing..

The DVDRW I first bought was a Samsung TSSH....something. It didn't burn DVDs :( CDs worked fine. And this was the only Samsung drive they has that time. So I had to get one from another brand after returning it to the dealers. It worked fine for about an year. You know, the DVDRW technology hadn't been matured like now those days, so the drives were not as good as they are now. Eventually that drive also kept on failing randomly, and I had to look for another drive. So I went ahead with the Sony DRU-810A, and that's the one I use in my main PC. It's been more than a year since I bought it and it' still working perfectly.

OMG! Really? Then the normal DVDR should be about Rs.45/= a piece. I'll get two of them, instead of a single 8.5GB DVDR, because generally, a burner can give far better quality burns on single layer media rather than the dual layer media.
Anyway, where is this place? I think I should take a peek in.
