View Full Version : How often do you reinstall your OS?

Anusha
12-27-2006, 04:13 PM
I used to reinstall Windows about once a three months or maybe less often. But since this is the testing time for Vista, it's down to about once in two weeks. But things are stable now. Hopefully, my current installation will hold me longer than that.

Don't listen to them. They are nuts! They think it's our fault when we get a problem.

And, didn't you learn that lesson from the previous time? This is not the only time they told you this right? It happened before no?

And what do you think they'll say when you call them now? You can't possibly have spywares in your system after the format, can you?

It would be better if you create an image of your freshly installed Windows and restore that image if something goes wrong. Further, you can create a second image when Windows and everything is working properly. So you don't have to reinstall most of the programs after you've restored. You can try restoring that 2nd image if something goes wrong, but if that also doesn't solve it, you can always restore that first image, where you haven't installed any 3rd party stuff. You know, it only should take about 2-10 minutes to restore an image.

Erm... as I can remember the reason for my latest installation was a virus named "brontokbro", that time I was using Norton and sadly enough it couldn't detect it!! The virus kept duplicating all my folders.... The appearance looked as a folder but once you click on it... ooops!!! it an .exe!!!

bt u need RAm for that macho,

512MB is enough if you are using XP (as both host and guest). You can allocate 128MB for the guess (i.e. virtual machine). You are not gonna use it all day long; just to try out a software no? Isn't it better than reinstalling everything?

Anusha
12-27-2006, 07:18 PM
Ah what is that:confused: :D

They are PC emulators; logical PCs. You can install Windows and almost all the operating systems and test whatever you want there - except games of course :D

There are two well-known appz that provide virtualization.
1. Microsoft Virtual PC, which is now free!!!! And it's very simple. You need 2004 for XP/2003 or 2007 Beta for Vista.
2. VMWare Workstation - offers better features, but not as simple as Virtual PC. Tehy have released a new beta, and I've already posted in another thread how to obtain it - legally. Use the search function in the forum.

Let it page the whole thing to the hard drive. Who cares...it's the virtual machine. Let it crawl! At least you're preventing damage to the Windows installation in your physical PC.

You people (not only you shanX) should really look into disk imaging.

Anyways, there are plenty of software that will work standalone. I have found few that I use can be worked from a previous installation, and I have moved them to a different partition. I don't have to install them after a reinstall of the OS. Just locate the main exe, and execute. If it requires registry entries, it will automatically add them. Most of the games are like that. NFSC, NFSMW, FEAR, FarCry, Battlefield, Prey, Doom, Quake4, Oblivion....you name it.

From the software that I use,
CD Bank Cataloguer, Ad-aware, Concise Oxford Dictioary, Hot Keyboard, utorrent, FTPRush, Flashget, Firefox, Thunderbird, Jetaudio, WinRAR, Locate, NetMeter, QSuite, Foxit Reader, DVD Decryptor, Damn NFO Viewer, UltraISO, PowerMenu all work as standalone.

btw although i knw about images, i hav no idea how to use em, pls can somebody explain?

You use an imaging software (eg: Acronis TrueImage is what I use; there is Norton Ghost, Symantec Live State Recovery etc.). You create a 1:1 backup of your system partition and save it as an image in another partition. You have to use the same software to restore it. It will erase the entire partition and extract the whole image to the partition. In case you can't boot into Windows, those software usually let you create bootabl disks or even add an option to run the software before Windows starts booting in.

No!! I think it uses some compression technique!! That's why you'll need the same program to store it.. cuz different company's compression techniques could be different!!!

Yeah, they will all have some sort of a compression. In the previous PC, I have found that the fastest backup/restore speed is when using the default compression. But on this new PC, I have found that the sweet spot is another compression level higher, maybe because the CPU is a lot faster than the hard drive.

If you are using XP, there is another thing you can do the make your images slow.

You know, it's the Registry that's resposible for most of the problems related to Windows. If you could isolate Windows from programs and user profiles, you can make your images smaller and easy to manage. When the user profile is in another partition, when you restore an old image, you will still have your latest user preferences saved.

You can use nLite to make a custom XP CD which has different programfiles folder and documents&settings folder. But test it before you install - mainly with the drive letter. Windows doesn't give you the results you expect on the first run.

I think it's because of this school vacation. Oh...he just did his O/L's didn't he? That means, he's gonna get a long vacation: too long and by the end of it, his hard drive will have lost all of its magnetic properties.

You know, that image of 3.97GB is for the partition which is about 11GB data. Right now, my Vista Business Edition %windir% folder exceeds 6.8GB. You know, there is a disc imaging software in Vista, but it doesn't seem to compress the image so no use to me.

15GB for an image!!! You'll need a separate hard drive for the images alone
