What do you do to protect your computer from viruses, spyware, and other malicious attacks? Tell us what software you use and what methods you employ.

My config is:
1. I use Windows Vista, which they say is at least secure than XP
2. NOD32 as the antivirus
3. Ad-aware as the spyware scanner, but I'm not using it in realtime mode. I scan about once a week with it.
4. Vista's built-in Firewall
5. Firefox!!!
6. Most importantly, I use my brain to keep out of trouble

I'm thinking about moving to Symantec Antivirus after that virus which wasn't detected by NOD32. It seems Kaspersky also detects it. Still in dilemma whether to remove it or not.

Which virus? Is it the one that disables the Folder options from Windows Explorer, a common one in cafe's and pen drives, McAfee doesnt detect it. Norton does

Juz to add to what Neon said.... The last time I got attacked by a virus I was actually using Norton suite... And Norton updated their virus guard to battle that particular virus was after more than 40 hours later if I'm not mistaken!!!

But NOD32 was already protected!! So u gotta think carefully!!!

Viruses are not self implementing, they get into our systems by our own mistakes

is what I think and I keep in my mind!

shanX

No, the solution is not to visit suspectable sites + using a mail service that has server side virus scanning (like Gmail)

No spyware checker[trying things, must choose one in near future]
Best combination is to use NOD or KAV with BitDefender

That was actually a trojan horse which imposed the ctfmon.exe (XP's Advanced Text Services file). Well, I didn't get infected. I tested it on behalf of a friend, who got his system infected. NOD32 couldn't detect it - too bad. Symantec AV could. tckrockz confirmed Kaspersly detected it too. But....I'm not so eager on getting rid of NOD32.
