An image drive software can't be made portabl because it needs to install device drivers for the emulated drive(s).
If you need a drive emulation software, Alcohol 52% is the best out there, even its drivers are digitally signed for Vista!!!

Its a IMAGE DRIVE only.
It's not 53%. It's 52%.
It can't burn images to CDs/DVDs. Can only make images from CDs/DVDs and mount them on an emulated drive.
And best of all, it's free!!!!

Anyway, I think it's always better to use the standard ISO format. There are ISO editing software available (eg: UltraISO, MagicISO, PowerISO) and you can make ISO images easily. All those softwares are ISO compliant I believe.

You know, Nero has been giving trouble in Vista; mainly codec issues, not problems with the burning software. So I had to find an alternative. I'm using Ashampoo Burning Studio right now. I got it for free when they had a newyear promotion. I posted it in the forum those days. It's working fine.
I also posted another software - an open source app for burning CD/DVDs. I can't remember the name of it. I'll try to find the thread. It should be in the downloads section. However, I didn't try it. I'm not sure if it is working standalone. :(
