Remains of slain Ven.Rathmalane Seelawansa Thero was taken to Colombo with the participation of many Buddhists Organizations on 26th December 2006 and Ven. Seelawansa Thero's funeral was held at Borella cemetery at 5.30pm on yesterday, 28th December 2006.

Ven. Seelawansa Thero being a fearless Buddhist monk was able to curtail the unethical conversion activities in the area launched by Pastor Ashley Samarasinghe together with the Principal of Angunakolawewa Junior School E.K.Piyasena and an Army deserter A.K.Priyantha alias Army Priyantha. Army Priyantha and E.K.Piyasena (believed to be a leading drugs dealer in the area) are said to be bought by the Pastor Samarasinghe and used both of them to hunt the poor and innocent villagers whenever they came forward against of his unethical conversions.
The highly decomposed body of Ven. Seelawansa Thero was found in his temple on 23rd December 2006 with several injuries on his head and chest. The dead body was taken to the Hambantota Base Hospital and the Chief Medical Officer Dr.E.H.H.C.Nanayakkara who conducted the postmortem into the mysterious death of Ven. Thero has given a verdict that the cause of death is "homicide".
When, Ven.Seelawansa Thero started occupying the temple in 2001, Ven. Thero was able to control the unethical conversion activities of Pastor Samarasinghe by educating the innocent Buddhists villagers and giving them the genuine leadership. Meanwhile Ven. Thero commenced 18 pre-schools in the area to give them the Buddhist education.
Soon after Ven. Thero commenced the Buddhist education in the village, Pastor Samarasinghe tried to take the revenge from the Ven. Thero in several occasions.

In 2003 thugs broke into the temple and hurled a hand grenade into his room and Ven. Thero was able to escape with minor injuries. In February 2006, a girl believed to a close relative of Army Priyantha whom was hired by Pastor Samarasinghe lodged a complaint at the Police Station saying that Ven. Thero was trying to molest her while she was attending to Dhamma School. Later it was reveled that the girl was forced to make such a false statement to the Police by her uncle Army Priyantha and if she didn't make that complaint, she was told that her mother will be killed by him.
Again in April 2006, a gang of thugs came to the temple and forcibly taken him away and beaten. Thereafter Ven. Thero had gone to the nearest Police Station to make a complaint with regard to the continuous harassment of Pastor Samarasinghe and his thugs but Ven. Thero was arrested there by the Police and detained at the Tangalle Prison until he was released on bail.
Meanwhile ASP Hambantota L.A.Wickramasinghe said that no arrests have been made yet and two special Police teams were deployed to investigate into the killing of Ven.Seelawansa Thero.
