Rukshika Prasadini, young journalist, would have been your daughter, sister, cousin, and friend. She was just 21 years when she was killed following a motor vehicle accident.
She was not just killed by a roadside thug, but by someone who heads an International Humanitarian Agency, International Organisation of Migration (IOM) Christopher Gascon. Someone who says that he works for humanity but then claims diplomatic immunity and leaves the country, of course in the name of humanity, his OWN humanity.
Canadian national Gascon has avoided the medical examination and therefore Police have failed to examine whether he was under the influence of liquor.
It was 5.00 a.m when his car collided with the van in which the young journalist was traveling. He had left the scene of the accident and now the country, claiming diplomatic immunity. Reports say that the IOM had given an assurance that Gascon would cooperate with the Police investigation. Then why did he leave Sri Lanka claiming diplomatic community? It is the question many of our readers have asked us.
We cannot answer - only Gascon could.
The Sunday Times quoted an official last week saying "the law should be equal to all and it should not be handled according to the whims and fancies of diplomats who hide behind diplomatic immunity after committing an offence".
Once a female lawyer from Geneva said an aid worker driving her International Federation vehicle could kill some Sri Lankan accidentally, but they would not have any problems in Sri Lanka since they could claim diplomatic immunity.
Is this humanity? Where are those Humanitarian Agencies like Free Media Moment (FMM) which scream at the slightest thing these days? Why are they silent when the fingers are pointed at them? Are they silent because FFM is also being funded by similar foreign NGOs. Have they paid her compensation?
There cannot be immunity for violators of humanity - black, white or brown.
