There's a lightweight (623kb), standalone and freeware app named HDTune, download it here (http://hdtune.com/download.html). You can find your hd's transfer rate, access times and more tech info thru this app. And it has an option to run a test to find ur hd's transfer rate and save a screen shot of it in PNG format. Post ur hd's screenshot along with details of ur hd :)
Mine....

shanX, are you running your hard disk in native SATA mode (AHCI mode) or PATA emulated mode?

How to know??
On the second tab of HD tune it says SATA 1

It's in the BIOS. Did Windows XP ask for HDD drivers when installing it? If not, then your drive is in emulated mode. AFAIK, in emulated mode, NCQ doesn't work! NCQ is a feature of SATA. SATA is not just a newer interface. It has some more specs. Anyways, this program showed mine running in ATA-512 mode!!! WTF is that?

I'm not sure whether it's showing the correct values there. For one thing, my Maxtor is cooler than the Samsung when I touch it. It's significantly cooler. For the second thing, I have felt some drives run about 10 degrees hotter than mine. For the third thing, check this out: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2454&p=13
Coz its not Vista compatible !

Even though the hard drive itself supports NCQ, it must not be functioning.
This is quoted from an email sent to some guy from Maxtor:
Dear Reed Wilson
You are correct and the Native Command Queuing is only a Serial ATA feature. I am sorry for the confusion. If you have any additional questions, please let me know.
Thank you,

If it's the same drive and different interfaces, NO. Check HDTach if you can. It gives somewhat more repeatable results.

Sure, your hard drive supports NCQ, but you have to run it in native SATA if you want to get it to "work"!. I can only enable it on Vista. Intel haven't released and will not be releasing necessary drivers for my motherboard to get it working int XP. They say that XP is already outdated. :D Vista has SATA support. So it doesn't require an additional driver as XP does.

Sequential speed alone doesn't speak of the speed of the hard disk. Practical applications may not be benefited by it. I believe you should check the reviews before you buy a hard disk. However, Seagate is the market leader, and they offered two undisputed qualities: silence and reliability. And guess what? Maxtor is owned by Seagate!
Anusha
01-10-2007, 08:00 PM
Check this out: Maxtor's DiamondMax 11 hard drive (http://techreport.com/reviews/2006q3/maxtor-diamondmax-11/index.x?pg=1)
This is about the Maxtor DiamondMax 11. But in the comparisons, they have used quite a few hard drives. You can see the plus points of Seagate drives. You'll see that the Seagate drives doesn't perform as fast as some of the other drives, for example the DiamondMax 10. The high sequential read speed doesn't necessarily mean the drive is fast.

Mine....

XP ne. Can't you see that from the screenshot?
Anyway, the "mode" will not change the transfer rate graph.
I still can't believe how the 250HJ beats the 252HJ

 may be coz of my fockin cpu, may be the nvidia chipset doesnt support well,
bt still the minimum rate n access time remains higher in 252hj, reading speeds are stable
i hope to buy another 252hj soon, its really cheap too.

AFAIK he has a nVIDIA chipset. With nVIDIA chipsets harddisk transfer rates are lower compared to other. No matter what you do they have lower transfer rates. One drawback in nVIDIA chipsets.

damn i havent posted mine here, nwayz, the HD250HJ scores 105~108 MBps Maximum Read speed, 68~70 MBps Minimum read speed, Burst Rate is 215~150MBps (its 200s on the Jmicron Controller) this is on ICH9 southbridge, ofcource Depending on the SATA controller, but very slightly, Burstrate can go really bonkers but other rates stay very close what i achived here all the time, look at Anushas and Gayans screenies, ur Transfer rates look pretty weird indeed sasika, 40ish minimum is not that good, and ur burst rate is really bonkers mate...u should stick the HDD on another PC and check it maybe its defective. plus the Curve should be pretty smooth, but look at urs its spiking every few seconds, KZRO's is worse must be sumthing with the controller

Native SATA mode (i.e. AHCI) brings two things to the party:
1. NCQ, which increases the throughput of the disk, not the raw sequential read/write speeds.
2. Hot swapping.

You shouldn't have got that model. It is an old family. You should have gone with 250HJ. 251HJ or 252HJ.

AFAIK he has a nVIDIA chipset. With nVIDIA chipsets harddisk transfer rates are lower compared to other. No matter what you do they have lower transfer rates. One drawback in nVIDIA chipsets.
yah the prob may be with the chipset :( :(
this is wht i found
s.bridge : NVIDIA® nForce 650i SLI (C55) Chipset
n.bridge : NVIDIA® nForce 430i (MCP55) Chipset
On-Board IDE / SATA
• Two IDE controllers on the NVIDIA nForce 430i chipset provides IDE HDD/CD-ROM with PIO, Bus Master and Ultra DMA133/100/66 operation modes
- Can connect up to 4 IDE devices
• NV RAID supports 4 SATA II ports (SATA1-4). Transfer rate is up to 300MB/s
• NV RAID
- Supports up to 4 SATA
- RAID 0 or 1, 0+1, 5, JBOD is supported
- RAID function work w/ SATAII H/D

Don't compare with KZRO's screenshot.
Compare it with this (http://www.elakiri.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1879670&postcount=142).
KZRO n gayannr both have the same HDD ne? bt why there is a huge difference?

damn i havent posted mine here, nwayz, the HD250HJ scores 105~108 MBps Maximum Read speed, 68~70 MBps Minimum read speed, Burst Rate is 215~150MBps (its 200s on the Jmicron Controller) this is on ICH9 southbridge, ofcource Depending on the SATA controller, but very slightly, Burstrate can go really bonkers but other rates stay very close what i achived here all the time, look at Anushas and Gayans screenies, ur Transfer rates look pretty weird indeed sasika, 40ish minimum is not that good, and ur burst rate is really bonkers mate...u should stick the HDD on another PC and check it maybe its defective. plus the Curve should be pretty smooth, but look at urs its spiking every few seconds, KZRO's is worse must be sumthing with the controller
Yes i will chk, i think the chipset matters most probably.
curve is not smooth bt is it really spikin ? i see flat ends. i thought this way the better, coz its stable right?
thanks

Maybe the HDD was in use when he ran the benchmark.
Also, the ICH9 seems to do a better job. It fluctuated even on mine. It does that for every drive on my mobo :(

There is no problem with your drive. That is the curve you get for F1s.

AHCI should be enabled from BIOS. BIOS defaults set it to IDE mode for all mobos as far as I know.
Win XP doesn't have a native AHCI driver. Drivers need to be installed at OS setup time, usually from a floppy disk. There could be alternative methods however.
Win Vista has native support for SATA HDDs, but better to install specific drivers after setup.

problem is underlined. Also note that with some MSI,Biostar mobos they have made the mobo in a way that we get the AHCI features,no option to enable/disable it in BIOS.And here is the kicker programs show it is in IDE mode emulated to SATA.

And FYI guys if you enabled AHCI after the win XP installation u have to reinstall windows. If not it will not boot.So better enable it when you reinstall the OS.

There is a workaround for Vista, if you have two controllers on your mobo like ICH and JMicron. Not sure if it will work for XP, but it should.

Doesn't matter. If there is a SATA port, it should work. Not sure with eSATA, because AHCI could be enabled on those ports by default for hot plug/unplug features.
