With the war on terrorism on the verge of a final victory, Army Chief Sarath Fonseka said yesterday LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran might have already left the country with his family and was not expected to go into hiding like former Iraqi President Saddam Hussain.

He told a news conference at his official residence in Colombo, that Prabhakaran would not commit suicide.

“He is a man, who loves his family and his food; such a man will not commit suicide. Even if he wants, his family will not allow him to do so and the cyanide capsule Prabhakaran carries may have been hidden by his family,” Lt. General Fonseka said

He speculated that Prabhakaran might have used an escape route by sea as he would not come to an army-controlled area.

When asked how he can escape and live in another country, the Army Chief said if anybody had one million US dollars in his pocket there were so many organizations and corrupt foreign generals to help anyone who wished to have a better life any where in the world.

He mentioned Malaysia, Burma, Cambodia and South Africa as some of the countries where Prabhakaran could live.

Lt. Gen. Fonseka reiterated that the war would end soon and his pledge and commitment was to end the war during his tenure in office and said the security forces were now fighting the Tigers who were boxed inside an area of 450 square kilometers.

“Finishing the war doesn’t mean I have to go home; I then concentrate on other issues like strengthening the army and other related matters,” he said.
