Vista is revolutionary, but it's too late. Vista uses all your hardware efficiently.
1. You have your video card doing nothing most of the times. On Vista, it's doing almost all the GUI rendering.
2. Say you have 1GB of RAM in your system. How much does XP use? 400MB? And still, when you try to bring a background app to the foreground, it is very slow. Why? XP doesn't activate features with the serial. You can't put a XP Pro key in XP Home to make it XP Pro. You have to have XP Pro. Not sure the other way round. But it's a stupid thing if you want to make your Pro CD a Home CD. :rolleyes: (However, Vista works like you said. All the editions are there in the DVD. The serial number determines which edition you've purchased)
But the WGA checks the serial key. If it's not a blacklisted key, it will conclude that Windows is genuine.

Well, Vista didn't bring up most things as well expected. However, service packs for Vista will bring more functionality (maybe SP2). XP has only 2 service packs because they (Microsoft) allocated more resources to Vista. There are a lot of updates coming up still.

I don't like upgrading either. I don't even install a service pack to an OS. I slipstream it to the Windows CD and install from the scratch. Good thing that we don't see new service packs that often :D

On my old PC with 1.25GB RAM, I ran FEAR at 800x600 4x AA, 4x AF, all settings to max except lighting, shadows and texture resolution without a pagefile!!! I even rendered Maya animations without a pagefile!!! There is a risk, but it's well worth it!

But if you are in a hurry to get some data off the hard drive and for some reason if your regular Windows installation doesn't boot in, a failsafe OS might come in handy. Just a suggestion. I don't use one either. But I keep backup images of the system partitions, so I can quickly restore it and go back.

BTW, even though we have Media Center Edition CDs, they are not available for retail purchase. You have to get them with a PC, unlike the other two editions.

Repair karanna nemei. Images kiyanne partitions eke 1:1 snapshot ekak. You can completely revert to a fully working backup in a couple of minutes. With Vista, it takes about 7 minutes because it's big, and all my software are also in the system partition.

You need to get hold of Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost or Symantec Live State Recovery. I trust only TrueImage, but I haven't used Live State Recovery. TrueImage works like a charm!

No men. It doesn't require that much space. My system partition is 15GB full and the images are only 5GB. (I keep only two) And this is not with the highest compression.

If you want to save up more space, you can install all your software to a separate partition and also your user profiles to a separate partition. I used to do that for XP using nLite. System partition only had C:\Windows folder. Since Windows get screwed up because of registry problems, isolating Windows was the best way to save up HDD space with smaller images.

If you have the same configuration, usually the motherboard and a CPU of the same family will do. But you might run into problems if you have different video cards, and reinstalling the video driver should be enough to bring it back to normal operation.

Every OS has its plus points. You have to exploit them for your needs. So, you have to find which suits best for you. We can't say which is the best OS. But out of the Microsoft OSes, I think Vista is the best. It will improve more overtime.
