The Singing Nun (1966)

A Belgian nun, Sister Ann is sent to another order where she's at first committed to helping troubled souls like, Nichole and little Dominic. When Father Clementi hears Sister Ann's uplifting singing style, he takes her to a talent contest. Suddenly, Sister Ann is signed to a record deal and everyone is listening to her light-hearted songs. Sister Ann is unprepared for her new found fame (like appearing on the "Ed Sullivan" show) and unwanted side-effects, including a wrongful attraction to an old friend, Robert. Written by Kelly

In the Singing Nun, the identify of Sister Ann is not recognized. Since she actually had a "hit record" which was the result of this movie, she really needs to be credited by IMDB. The Singing Num was Jeanine Deckers. who was a member of the Domnican Fichermont Convent in Belgium. She was born Jeanne-Paule Marie Deckers. Her sisters encouraged her to record an album of religious songs in 1963. One of the songs was Dominique. Dominique became an overnight success and Sister Jeanine became known as Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile), she made it to the Ed Sullivan Show and a hit movie, The Singing Nun, was produced after her success. Souer Sourire didn't like celebrity so her musical career was short. Most or her profits went to her convent. She didn't like celebrity as a result released her second album in 1967, I Am Not a Star. Jeanne was a deeply religious person, but disagreed with her churches teachings on birth control. In 1967, she recorded Glory Be to God for the Golden Pill under the name Luc Dominique She ended her musical career after that and opened a school for autistic children in Belgium with her companion Annie Pescher. In 1982, she and Pescher committed suicide by overdosing on barbiturates and alcohol. They were buried together.

Junior Asparagus is anxious for the new show production to be finished. Bob the Tomato reads a letter from Cairo, Illinois about "waiting" by directing a Bible-times interview with Abraham, Sarah (voiced by Delilah) and their promised son, Isaac. Like in Josh and the Big Wall!, Bob and Junior use imagination to travel. Their patience is tested by splitting camels, a confused nurse, an easily distracted film crew, and others. This episode's second segment is "Blunders in Boo-Boo-Ville". It is nearing the time of the great “Boo-Boo-Bird Festival,” but there haven’t been any Boo-Boo Birds spotted in the town for a long time. The festival is in danger of being canceled if the town’s residents can’t come up with a way to attract the birds back to their city. Jacques (Larry the Cucumber) learns a tough lesson about taking his time to make sure things are done correctly when an attempt to bring back the boo-boo birds doesn't go as smoothly as hoped. One of his inventions gone awry creates a rift in his friendship with Maurice (Bob the Tomato), and he must embark on his next task alone. He learns his lesson from a scientist and inventor named Leon Merengue (Charlie Pincher). Madame Blueberry appears as the town's mayor.

It is written by Phil Vischer and directed by Brian K. Roberts. J. Chris Wall produced the film and Kurt Heinecke composed the score. Grandpa George who made his debut in Rack, Shack, and Benny as its narrating security guard gatekeeper returns to Big Idea Productions as Clark Wayne (parody name for Mark Twain). He was previously in The Toy That Saved Christmas as its narrating postman.

How It All Began

CBN’s animation series, Superbook, was born out of a vision that Pat Robertson and the leadership of CBN had for Japan in 1979. The project was largely centered around CBN’s desire to promote the Bible to the Japanese public in partnership with Word of Life Press and Ken Taylor of Living Bibles International.

During the period 1979 - 1981, CBN approached Young and Rubicon to find the best way to reach the Japanese culture. Young & Rubicon conducted research to determine the best way to promote interest in the Bible and they concluded that Japanese children would be most open to Bible stories and that the popular genres of animation and comic books (called Mangas) would be effective media sources for achieving this goal.

CBN then sent Dick Thomas, CBN’s Marketing V.P., to Japan for research and development purposes. Thomas met with TV executives and market researchers and returned with the recommendation that CBN should get involved with television animation (anime) as the type of program to communicate the message of the Gospel most effectively.

CBN’s strategy included hiring the Yomiko Advertising Agency to work on the Bible promotion project; and it’s through this relationship that CBN contracted the Tatsunoko animation firm to develop an animation series, entitled The Family Adventure, based on Old Testament Bible stories. At that time Tatsunoko produced the top three animation series being broadcasted during prime-time on Japananese TV. CBN sent producer Jason Vinley over to Japan to coordinate the script writing and production with Tatsunoko; Vinley was responsible for both internal Biblical content and external animation. By 1981 Tatsunoko had produced 26 thirty-minute animated television programs and packaged them into a series, which was renamed Superbook, a name chosen to signify the source of the animated stories. The resulting series was broadcast on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. in six major Japanese cities, achieving fairly high audience ratings. In 1983 CBN decided to produce another 26 episodes of Superbook. The Superbook series was broadcast twice in Japan from 1981-1984.

Initially, Superbook was only contemplated as a television series for Japan. The animation characters were characteristically Japanese and CBN had no plans of using the series elsewhere. Internal discussions among those responsible for the production and distribution of Superbook in Japan questioned the marketability of the series outside of Japan. For example, one internal memo obtained from CBN states that 'Japanese animation is Japanese animation and it doesn't sell well outside of Japan.' However, the success of Superbook in Japan in terms of high audience ratings and increased sales of Bibles, convinced David Clark, CBN's Marketing Director, to have the series dubbed into English. Clark had tested audience responses to the series at the MIP TV trade expo in France and believed the series could be marketed outside of Japan. After the series was dubbed into English, CBN decided to broadcast Superbook in 1983 over the CBN Cable Network (precursor to The Family Channel) in the U.S., which accessed 10 million households at the time.

Since 1983, the Superbook animation series has been dubbed into over 40 languages and broadcasted in well over 80 countries and has impacted the lives of thousands of people throughout the world. Superbook’s success has gone way beyond the scope of what CBN had originally hoped for it and it continues to touch lives on broadcasts throughout the world today.

The series began in the middle of a game of hide and seek, as a young boy named Justin Casey (Gen) finishes counting and begins searching for his friends Angela (usually called "Angie") and Corkey Roberts (Kanna and Tsukubo Natsuyama). As he searched for the brother and sister in the wooded area, a storm occurred all of a sudden. Justin managed to sneak up on the two before the rain started pouring, forcing them to run for cover. They would eventually find a house in the wooded area, previously unseen according to Justin. At first glance it appeared nobody was home after entering the house, until they discovered a robot named Solar Ion Robot (Kadenchin), or the acronym SIR. They would soon meet the owner of the house, Professor Humphrey Bumble (Dr. Tokio Taimu), who introduced the children to his greatest creation, a time machine. Professor Bumble's attempt at recreating Benjamin Franklin's famous lightning experiment with the use of a kite flying outside the house to get the machine working only led up to SIR's temporary change in personality before sending the entire house on course for the past. The children never realized how long the journey back home would be due to Professor Bumble's misguidance and errors in time travel, but in the meantime they witnessed and participated (to little or no consequences) in numerous events in the Bible's New Testament, from John the Baptist's birth to the rise of the Apostle Paul.

Eventually, they make it home the exact same way they traveled into the past in the first place. SIR gets a knock in the head which, again, makes him go berserk and attack the time-machine. Ironically, this attack fixes it in such a way that it finally sends the whole crew back to their own time period, and the show ends, (with SIR having reverted back to normal by the end of the trip).

‘Am I my brothers keeper?’ ‘In the beginning was the word.’ ‘Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.’ ‘A law unto himself.’ The inflections, cadences and familiar phrases of the first English Bible set the foundations for the way English has been spoken and written in the five centuries that followed its first publication.
The struggle to translate the Bible into a language that everyone could understand was part of a challenge to the medieval Catholic Church, which conducted its rituals in Latin and invested huge authority in the Pope. Those who wanted to reform the church believed that each individual could relate directly to God, without the mediation of priests, but to do so they needed access to the scriptures.
Direct line to God
In 1370 John Wycliffe, a scholar at Oxford University, challenged the central role of the Catholic Mass. He said that the Bible was the sole source of Christian authority, not the Pope. The Church declared him a heretic and called his followers Lollards (mutterers). But they could not suppress his message: that the people could be trusted to read the Bible for themselves and through that, relate directly to God. By translating the Bible into English, Wycliffe, and those who followed him, not only opened that door to the scriptures, they also started to rescue and define the English language which had become overlaid by French and Latin since the Norman Conquest.
Wycliffe’s translation of the Bible was banned, and possession of a copy was considered evidence of heresy – punishable by burning to death. This even extended to Wycliffe being condemned as a heretic after his death, and his body dug up and burned. Nevertheless, the Lollard Bible continued to be passed from hand to hand and many copies survive today.
Change across Europe
During the reign of Henry VIII, frustration at the Church boiled over simultaneously with a flowering of scholarship and, perhaps most significantly, the invention of printing. There was also a growing challenge to the Catholic Church across Europe from those who believed that the wealth and power of the Church was a betrayal of the people, and that salvation could not be attained by performing rituals or acts of charity.
In Germany, Martin Luther was leading a growing reformation of the Church, with the protection of the local ruler. This inspired the scholar William Tyndale to translate the New Testament from the original Greek into a form of English that would sound familiar to ordinary people. But unlike Luther, he had no powerful protectors, and, in the spring of 1524, he fled from England to Germany. There, in August 1525, he completed his translation of the New Testament and took it to Cologne to be printed. Despite a raid on the printer, a few months later his Bible was printed, and thousands of copies of the compact book found their way to England to be handed round in secret, despite vicious suppression.
Tyndale moved to Antwerp, which was a relatively safe haven, and had an enormous printing industry. The printers boosted their profits by smuggling the new Bible to England as single pages hidden in bigger books. By the time Tyndale died, it is estimated that some 50,000 copies had reached England in this way.
At home, the conflict within Christianity took a new twist when Henry VIII declared himself to be the divinely appointed head of the Church in England. But the reformers still had powerful enemies, and Tyndale was betrayed, arrested and incarcerated in a castle in Brussels before being burnt at the stake in October 1536.
The Bible comes home
His execution did not defeat his mission to bring the Bible directly to English-speaking people, though. A few months after his death, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, recommended that people read Tyndale’s Bible and, in turn, wrote the Anglican Book of Common Prayer.
This set the tone for the English Reformation, but it was to turn violent as Thomas Cromwell led the destruction and looting of the monasteries on behalf of Henry VIII. Eventually two versions of the English Bible were licensed: The Matthew Bible and The Great Bible, both largely based on Tyndale’s translation. Not only were they permitted, every parish in the country was forced to buy a copy. This act of defiance against the old Church emphasised the belief that everyone stands before God without the need for clergy – a fundamental aspect of British Protestantism.
Politics and intrigue
During the short reign of Henry’s 9-year-old son, Edward, the destruction of the monasteries and all the art and objects they contained gathered pace. The backlash came after Edward died and was succeeded by Mary. Cranmer was arrested and the Catholic Church’s leading intellectuals were brought in to persuade him to recant – but he turned the tables on them by changing the final paragraph of the speech he had promised to make. He was burnt at the stake in 1556, but the English Bible survived.
In 1558, Elizabeth came to the throne. A sophisticated politician, she presided over the development of a new kind of Protestantism which contained compromises with some Catholic traditions and saved the remaining cathedrals. Some Protestants could not accept these compromises. In an attempt to maintain their support, Elizabeth’s successor, James, commissioned a new Bible, again, largely based on Tyndale’s work. This was the King James Version, which set a standard and influenced writers for four centuries.
Across the Atlantic
This did not stop the divisions and rancour worsening and developing into the English Civil War. When peace, and the throne, were restored, the Bible wars were over, in Britain at least. In America, though, the debate continued among Protestants from all over Europe who had fled persecution. Among their descendents are the USA’s 125,000 English-speaking Protestant churches, which range from champions of Civil Rights to the right-wing Evangelical leaders who preach with missionary fervour that there is no other means to salvation than the Bible.
Perhaps its most important legacy, though, is the Protestant notion put by Jefferson: ‘God hath created the mind free.’ This underpinned the separation of church and state, the constitutional guarantee of freedom of expression and the right to fight for freedom of choice, freedom of conscience and freedom of speech."

Exile to Molokai was the means with which leprosy was dealt with in the Hawaiian Islands during the late 1800s. Molokai was an untamed isle located between the islands of Oahu and Maui. Abandoned for all extents and purposes, the lepers attempted to scrape out a living in their squalor without outside aid or care. Enter the courageous Father Damien. He was the first priest to go to Molokai. And even though his bishop strictly warned him that "he must not touch anyone," Father Damien risked his life and health to reach out to the suffering.

Gradually, Father Damien was able to gain the trust of the lepers. Additionally, and more importantly, his cries for additional help were heard and heeded by others. The success of his appeals was unbelievably dismaying to superiors who were more interested respect and riches than reaching out to the suffering.

Eventually, as expected Father Damien was also afflicted. This, however, only seemed to provide him with an even greater drive to ameliorate the conditions of his now "fellow" lepers. After collapsing during Mass, he was carried to the very hospital that he himself had established where he died. There is a touching seen when all gather to pray for him at the hospital's entrance.

I have seen Ben-Hur (I also like the 1925 version very much) I don't know how many times now. I think I have stopped counting seven years ago. I never tire to see this movie and, needless to say, I know all the scenes and dialogue by heart. This picture has everything in it.

Almost all human sentiments are represented in the story: joy, sorrow, despair, pride, jealousy, hope, revenge, anger, forgiveness, compassion, redemption, love, hate, friendship, humour, etc, etc. During the three and a half hours it takes for the story to unfold, we see passing by our very eyes just about every example of what constitutes the human condition. What I find even more remarkable in this movie is the fact that Christ is present throughout the entire story, but we don't really see him in the flesh (at the exception of a few scenes, where the Lord is, in fact, in the background) and yet, his spirit and message is ever present through the words and actions of the various characters. It's not for nothing that the complete title of this great story is "Ben-Hur, a Tale of the Christ". The movie is well-acted (especially Heston, Griffith, Hawkins and, let's not forget, the wonderful Finley Currie, playing Balthazar), the dialogue is always concise, yet never short of meaning and substance (the way dialogues in movies should be), the decor and settings are just magnificent and the Miklos Rozsa score is simply superb. Besides Quo Vadis (the 1951 version, which, incidentally, I have recommended to those who have also enjoyed Ben-Hur), I cannot think of a better movie about the early days of Christianity than this one. There are others, of course, (The Robe, just to name one), but none has the grandeur and the spectacular dimension of Ben-Hur. It's the movie I would want to watch one last time on my death bed. I gladly and proudly give Ben-Hur a score of 10 out of 10!

Episode 1
How to Find God

Author and filmmaker Jon Ronson asks, how do agnostics come to Christianity?

Increasingly, it's through Alpha, a course devised many years ago in a well-heeled church in London's Knightsbridge, but which now operates in tens of thousands of churches of all denominations, in universities, prisons and military bases across the world.

Over 11 million people worldwide have now attended an Alpha course. But what happens on it? And do agnostics really become Christians in such a short space of time?

Afforded complete access to one Alpha course, at St Aldate's Church in Oxford, Jon documents the whole process over its eight weeks.

Episode 2
Muslim School

Muslim School traces the lives of two girls from very different backgrounds in their first year at a Muslim faith school.

The Nottingham Islamia has opened its doors to cameras, giving a rare insight, through the eyes of two children, into what it means to have a Muslim education in Britain today.

Seven-year-old Zara is third generation Pakistani, and Aysha, 12, is a white girl from a mixed English/Pakistani family. Both have transferred from regular state schools to the Nottingham Islamia: one of some 130 Muslim faith schools in Britain.

Inside the school, boys and girls line up separately at the start of each day for a timetable of Arabic lessons, Islamic studies, prayers, and a basic national curriculum.

At lunch time, the school stage in the assembly hall doubles up as a mosque, where staff and students pray together.

Filmed over one year, the film captures Zara and Aysha's lives both at school and at home as they make choices about their identity and beliefs.

Episode 3
Commando Chaplains

The last place you might expect to find a chaplain is on the frontline with the Royal Marines, dodging bullets in Afghanistan. And yet chaplains have served in the British Armed forces since the Middle Ages.

Their job is a vital one: administering to the wounded, listening to the fearful, and offering spiritual guidance in the heart of war. As religion is dragged into conflicts, by the rhetoric of jihad and crusade, the military chaplain is increasingly coming under the spotlight.

Filmed earlier this year, this programme follows two Royal Marine chaplains, Nigel Beardsley and William Gates, as they travel around 'their parish' in Afghanistan, bringing faith to the frontline.

Unlike the other armed services, they go whereever their parishioners need them and that often means putting themselves in the line of fire with nothing but their faith to protect them.

It is a story not just of belief, but of heroism, human grit and the role of religion on the modern battlefield.

Episode 4
The Exhumer

An observational documentary following the work of exhumation specialist, Peter Mitchell, whose profession has already seen him exhume 30,000 bodies - sometimes individuals, sometimes whole cemeteries - and rebury them in new graves.

He was the man tasked with the exhumation of 15,000 bodies from the ground beneath St Pancras station to make way for the cross channel rail link, and he's moved countless other bodies at the request of relatives.

Digging up the dead raises profound ethical and religious questions, and taps into our very sense of ourselves. Whether you are in favour or against it, it provokes strong emotions.

With over 25 years experience in 'bereavement services', including cemetery management and cremation, Mitchell is well-established as one the UK's leading exhumation consultants. But you can't just go around digging people up - you need a good reason, and permission from the relevant authorities - often the Church of England.

We follow Peter over several months as he supervises the controversial exhumation of a Christian cemetery in Egypt - where some of the bodies have been buried for as little as just a few months - and oversees a mass exhumation job at an old churchyard in Scotland.

Episode 5
Muslim and Looking for Love

If you're young, single and Muslim, finding love is getting increasingly difficult.

Qualifications, height, job prospects and even complexion are high on the list of demands. Then there's the question of nationality. Will your husband or wife come from Britain or from abroad?

For professional women, educated Muslim men are in short supply. Muslim men tend to marry at a younger age, not good news when you're pushing 30.

At the Birmingham Central Mosque, they think they have the answer. As well as ministering to its congregation, it also offers the services of one of the largest Muslim marriage bureaus.

The Bureau has over a thousand people on its books and Mr Haq and Mr Razzaq are the voluntary matchmakers. Unlikely as it may seem, these two middle-aged men are at the vanguard of a Muslim marriage revolution. For them, the Bureau offers a third way, a space between the traditional arranged marriage and the Western dating scene.

Episode 6
Divorce: Jewish Style

In Jewish law, it is the husband's right to decide whether he will give his wife a divorce, called a Get.

If he refuses her, the wife may be sentenced to years of living in a dead marriage.

She cannot remarry in the Orthodox Jewish way, and any child she has from a new relationship is considered illegitimate. In Hebrew, she is called an Agunah: a 'chained woman'.

With rare access to the Orthodox Jewish community, both here in the UK and also in Israel, this film explores the controversial world of Jewish divorce to find out why these apparently outmoded laws still hold sway.

Episode 7
Talking to the Dead

Revelations gains unprecedented access to a Spiritualist Church in East London to provide an intimate portrait of people whose worlds have been transformed by a belief in life beyond the grave.

This poignant film about grief and loss lifts the lid on a belief system which many are quick to ridicule, meeting mediums and members of the congregation and exploring the different paths that have led them to the church.

Each member of the congregation has a different story but all take comfort in their visits to the church. Is their religion a fool's paradise or do Spiritualists perhaps have access to a world which most of us prefer not to contemplate: the world of the afterlife?

One of more than 400 Spiritualist churches across the UK, this East London church has been around for 80 years. The services are lead not by priests, but by visiting mediums who are invited to give demonstrations of their ability to make contact with the dead.

For Spiritualists, the descriptions and messages that the mediums deliver amount to scientific proof of the existence of a Spirit World that can and does communicate from beyond the grave. For Spiritualists, death is just the start of a new phase.

Episode 8
How Do You Know God Exists?

Leading figures in the five principal faiths in Britain discuss their beliefs and answer questions about their basic faith and their own spiritual journeys.

The key figures interviewed are Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols, Muslim theologian Tariq Ramadan, Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and Sadhu Paramtattvadas.

As well as addressing the 'big questions', including their concepts of God, heaven and hell, they speak frankly about their struggles and frequent moments of doubt, about the divisions within their ranks and crimes that have been committed in the name of religion.

Livy befriends two well-educated Japanese American women who were working the farm, Flora and Rose (Tania Gunadi and Gwendoline Yeo). She finds comfort and familiarity in their friendship. Livy is polite and civil to her new husband and his sister Martha (Mare Winningham), but she harbors feelings for the father of the baby, a World War II soldier, and feelings of guilt for the pregnancy. Ray, however, is caring, patient, and supportive of Livy, but the fact that she does not want him hurts him deeply. Slowly over time, the two come to understand and love each other, and appreciate that though they are different, neither is better or worse than the other.

Danny and Pete become friends and think up ways for Danny to be accepted into heaven. STOLEN SUMMER demonstrates Jones' genuine talent as a filmmaker, particularly in its strong performances, while his moving script captures a boy's perspective on friendship and religious belief. A story of redemption and forgiveness.

What would happen if we walked in His steps?
