Microsoft's Biggest Enemy Now: Apple, Linux or Itself?

In a meeting with financial analysts (http://osnews.com/story/21035/Ballmer_Linux_Bigger_Competitor_than_Apple) last week, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer laid out who he thinks are the biggest threats today to Windows on the client side. Surprisingly, Apple (http://www.cio.com/article/483082/subject/Apple+Inc.) wasn't number one. It wasn't number two or three either. Referring to a pie chart at the meeting that gauges threats to Windows, Ballmer said that Windows itself, both licensed and pirated, were the top two threats to Microsoft (http://www.cio.com/article/483082/subject/Microsoft+Corporation) in the client OS space, followed by Linux, then Apple. Ballmer quipped: "Windows license, number one market share. Number two market share goes to Windows pirated, or unlicensed. That's a competitor that's tough to beat; they've got a good price and a heck of a product, but we're working on it."



Ballmer followed with a carefully-worded mockery of Apple's "point or more" market share growth over the past year. "A point of market share on a number that's about 300 million [number of PCs shipped worldwide in 2008] is interesting. It's an interesting amount of market share, while not necessarily being as dramatic as people would think."
"Number two market share goes to Windows pirated, or unlicensed. That's a competitor that's tough to beat; they've got a good price and a heck of a product." Though Linux's 0.88 percent OS market share (http://marketshare.hitslink.com/os-market-share.aspx?qprid=9) hardly qualifies as a threat, Linux does compete with Microsoft in more areas than Apple and it is much cheaper. "Cheap" takes on an appealing sound in an economic recession.
Clearly, Apple has been hit by the economic downturn in the past two months. It has seen dips in Mac sales (http://www.cio.com/article/481486/Research_Firm_Mac_Sales_Fall_Six_Percent_in_Januar y) and market share (http://www.cio.com/article/482736/Windows_Wins_Mac_Loses_February_Market_Share_Race) , and even announced a small round of layoffs (http://valleywag.gawker.com/5163905/apple-source-confirms-50-layoffs-in-sales) Wednesday.
But is Ballmer truly wary of Linux? Is he just trying to disparage Apple as usual? It's hard to tell. Industry experts interviewed for this story say the folks at Redmond will continue to face threats on all sides and even from within.
Linux Attacks on More Fronts
Matt Rosoff, an analyst with independent research firm Directions on Microsoft, mostly agrees with Ballmer about the threat pecking order, saying that Linux trumps Apple as a threat, but that Microsoft's biggest rival is itself.
"Macintosh computers are a threat in precisely one market - upscale consumer PCs, a small part of the overall PC market," Rosoff says.

M$ is facing a huge majority that say they dont want to upgrade to windows 7 because it'll too be like vista(it mostly is but a lil bit faster) but still the same PC running XP SP3 will be faster than both the only down fall of xp is that the RAM issue i dont know its fixed in 64bit version or not but im very much sure that someone will make a patched version of xp for 4GB+ RAM same as they did on making Win98 recognize NTFS drives

If you talking about memory issue in every 32bit OS then yes WinXP 64bit supports even 16GB as i remember.

Anyway if Apple can release their OS openly without any need for their propitiatory hardware then Windows will face some trouble.

any one saw that PC mag (or other mag nt 100%sure)interview with Bill gates? the reporter asked why M$ don't taking any serious legal actions against pirated copies in countries like China, and india.

Bill gates said, " let them use it, let them get used to it. let them get addict. then we will get the revenge"

and in the XPs drowing board, they focus their minds and even took the psychological sup.. (have a doubt.. try google) .. thats y most of us addict to XPs interface and couldn't switched for vista even ;)

Linux and Apple are more and more better than MS. Linux has high security and lot of helpers available bcus Source codes are freely available. Linux red hat and fedora is 100% acts as Windows and it's user friendly too. MS copied linux in there vista and windows 7 OSs.
If MS never release there source codes they face huge trouble very soon. Because hackers and virus generators they always try to hack and damage MS OS

You can make similar interface with linux without getting sued. But the hardware,software compatibility and user community are the biggest things you can't beat in windows.

The guy next door use MS Word and Windows the guy in Antarctic use the same. Almost every hardware has windows drivers and most of them detects automatically. So much compatibility and so many people to talk and share.

boot camp mean more expansion for Windows. Now they can run on Mac too. From Apples side they can sell more machines. People like to buy them coz they are beautiful. Now they can run their favorite Windows in them too. So Windows in a Nice machine :P Apple can sell more machines but it will not really expand Mac OS userbase.

If you check Mac forums most of them have Win XP running on their machines with OS X.

About legal action yes Apple take very serious legal actions.. way better than Microsoft. They wanna sell machines and their hardware for premium price. Thats where they earn money. So they dont want others to run only their software.
Apple actually selling same PC hardware for very high prices with nice looking bodies. But their designing skills are great!

The prob is Vista is too much for todayz hardware. So people finds it difficult to switch. In the other hand Vista has no good reasons to switch.

But in Windows 7 point of view it has features which will make people switch and much low hardware requirements too.

Linux or Mac or what ever you need good reasons to make people switch. In my opinion most people don't care open source or close source or what ever. They don't even know whats inside. They want something which will run faster and do things easily. That's all. They even like to pay some price for that.

I see Mac has some few good reason to make people switch. But from Linux point of view still not much for normal PC users.

Then why Mac has even less number of viruses than Linux?

Its mostly depending on the userbase. Virus writers write codes for popular OS for Wide reach. And virus writers are also anti virus makers. They wanna sell their product so they compete each other by writing viruses which other program can't scan.
I have researched this well as a Virus scanner get popular its detection rate get low. Because then most of the virus writers spread the virus after scanning using all major anti-virus programs. I know still kaspersky and most of those russian anti virus scanners have good detection rate. thats coz they are the ones who writing viruses to make this game going.

When it comes to server OS linux and Open source playing major role. MS server softwares are very expensive. So you think open source has big effect.
If you don't manage or monitor your linux server well it will get hacked in no time. Its more easy and comparatively more safe to run a Windows server if you are not a tech person.

So open source has its advantages and disadvantages.
Open source has no virus and it can't be hacked coz its done by hackers are totally fake. But open source can help to improve the software.

thats we gonna care about that too.. the comps lyk canonical (ubuntu) consider about the UF thing.. but as i see the geeks mind is the prob. personally i like to code my self, see whats happening inside, control by hand, and i found and thinking "this is very easy. anyone can do that." and i know 99& of linux programmers on the same status. thats the matter.we are looking at our works in a geek view.. but normal ppl don't expect that.. and the microsoft know this. and solved it.. but we don't care. that much..

(i realized this. so i get the help of my mother to test them, she is without much IT knowladege, and also she is a begginer for everything.

my method is this. I'm put the programm on the screen an hand over the PC to her. and i leave the room, there is a hidden cam in my room and i record every single movements, actions of my mother infrount of my soft.. it always giving me the nongeek image... thats my seacret.. )

Mac wanna sell their machines. They are not only a software company. They make lot of money selling hardware. Their softwares are very cheap compared to Windows. And they have some killer application software which you can't find with Win or Linux

Its mostly depending on the userbase. Virus writers write codes for popular OS for Wide reach. And virus writers are also anti virus makers. They wanna sell their product so they compete each other by writing viruses which other program can't scan.
I have researched this well as a Virus scanner get popular its detection rate get low. Because then most of the virus writers spread the virus after scanning using all major anti-virus programs. I know still kaspersky and most of those russian anti virus scanners have good detection rate. thats coz they are the ones who writing viruses to make this game going.

When it comes to server OS linux and Open source playing major role. MS server softwares are very expensive. So you think open source has big effect.
If you don't manage or monitor your linux server well it will get hacked in no time. Its more easy and comparatively more safe to run a Windows server if you are not a tech person.

So open source has its advantages and disadvantages.
Open source has no virus and it can't be hacked coz its done by hackers are totally fake. But open source can help to improve the software.

No not at all. Even from benchmarks its not giving huge improvements from outdated hardware. But Mac users has nothing to do coz other hardware are not compatible with their machine. People stick to Mac because some of those Killer appz, stable OS and beautiful design of the computer.

I hope that commercial softwares r more proffesional & safer than open source. U may see in the readme file of some free software even it's open-source or not, there is a section called "Knowen Bugs". But if it was commercial, they don't try to reveal its bugs untill they r fixed.

With a source code which is open,
1. Anyone can find bugs & fix them as fast as possible.
2. Anyone can find bugs & make a way to break its securiy with them.

However there r no problem of me to use linux as a secondary OS.
But my lovely windows must be the first. :D

Nice thread.What I see is microsoft is always greedy for things.When somebody develops a good code,They just go to them ,offer them a serious amount and get all the proprietary rights to them.Next,add them into the OS as something.Vista got screwed at this point.XP had things in it but not too much from others.But vista was delayed so all the added code were put in to it and it got screwed.A bugging OS.The 7 comes in here.They built 7 from the scratch using that purchased code when ever applicable and made a single OS not a patched one from here and there.And then they have other tools as addons which you can install only if you want.I dont mind what they do since I get those OSes free.I hope they will give 7 free for us too :D

so since 1978. the m$ targeted the HW vendors and made millions of long term agreements . so major vendors made there product for m$, then the upcoming and the miner Vendors did the same. that's how M$ took the control.

but today. main Vendors lyk. IBM, HP, Huawei, Sony(a bit) geforce, and others consider about the FOSS couz. nowadays they hv realized that the FOSSes are running a major role.and they had enough from the FACIST m$.hik. couz they are tring to control the vendors to sell their products. who wanna give his admin power to another comp? :) .

SW vendors = IF the majority of Hw are compatible with M$ and every ones have to buy them? what can the Soft developers do ?. NOTHING. couz they have to switch for the worlds trend...

but here we can see another story.also. couz software vendors not only targeting the users. (actually users) couz they are in a risky business. couz anytime anywhere, anyone could make a soft better than theirs . and it should be stooped :). so they have to listen the ppls voice also. we can hack those softs and make them as a linux one. but its not good for normal users. so they have to wait. till some one found the solution. but others can hack them. as they wish..

ex. google chrome hadn't a linux installer. but i got the dev version and I couldn't wait anymore. so i made it running my self. in the next day. @ the net i saw millions of geeks did the same. :D .. thats the power of FOSS.. (out topic sorry)

(you know? m$s market is in a agr8 danger. so they planed the long long (even for 50 years) plans. lyk make agreements with governments to gv their IT education with M$ (f*ck u bill. we suffer your A** W***** works) thats y we have M$ in school and the students gonna adict. (first they target the teachers.. :) the week point) luckyly this year the agreement with m$ and gov is over. and they want let gov to renew. and from 2011 we can c a FOSS based education and a developed country :D huraaah !!!!

HW vendors - Trying to catch the market. they consider about only the market. couz they dun have to worry about open source, couz there are NO open source or FREE (i mean GNU freedom, not the commercial one). at the users end there are no possibility of bug fixing, mods (miners are not considerable) or they dun care how wether they gonna learn or not...

so since 1978. the m$ targeted the HW vendors and made millions of long term agreements . so major vendors made there product for m$, then the upcoming and the miner Vendors did the same. that's how M$ took the control.

but today. main Vendors lyk. IBM, HP, Huawei, Sony(a bit) geforce, and others consider about the FOSS couz. nowadays they hv realized that the FOSSes are running a major role.and they had enough from the FACIST m$.hik. couz they are tring to control the vendors to sell their products. who wanna give his admin power to another comp? :) .

SW vendors = IF the majority of Hw are compatible with M$ and every ones have to buy them? what can the Soft developers do ?. NOTHING. couz they have to switch for the worlds trend...

but here we can see another story.also. couz software vendors not only targeting the users. (actually users) couz they are in a risky business. couz anytime anywhere, anyone could make a soft better than theirs . and it should be stooped :). so they have to listen the ppls voice also. If millions of users gonna hv linux. instead of m$. what can they do? the only option is make a linux copy. lot of major software vendors do the same (ignore the ppl. who have made agreements with m$. ) ex Skype.

as linux users we don't care If its a linux version or win or even mac. couz we got alternatives. if we don't. we gonna make the actual software to run with us. thats tha FREEDOM OF USE ;) . (i'm not talking about the normal PC users, they expect to do their works not to learn or hack) .. thats not good for Sw vendors market, and they all gonna gv us linux versions.

I'm intersting in using linux as once I said u in another of yours. But I'm afraid to do. I heard there is a way run on windows as a normal software. If u can please give me more information.

dual boot. run windows and ubuntu in same PC
run windows natively in linux using virtual Box (i'm doing it) (you can work with windows as a normal soft in linux.
Run Linux nativly in Windows. you can install linux (ubuntu is better in this way) in the windows. (every ubuntu CD hv the option, but can't get the full perfomances)SO whzzap ?

I heard abt it from one of gayan's threads. But I really don't know much abt linux coz I've not used a linux platform for years. I hope wine is a sort of emulator like PS2, N64... emulators. Can any just-released windows application be run on a linux platform? :)
Wine is not an emu..it's a wrapper for windows apps...btw u can even play COD4..etc..search on utube for videos...and even office 2007 :D

no prob.. :D its not a prob.. but some crackers want run. so its better to have a noncracked or searialed one.. in COD i installed it in another win PC and copied the serial. but it want be a problem. couz almost all the games got a searial/ CD key system.

copy protect means ? DATA/ song/ Games? wht kinda thing?
