The LTTE terrorists attacked the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, one of the UNESCO designated World Heritage Sites venerated by Buddhists all over the world on 25th of January 1998.
At 6:10 am on 25th January 1998, suicide carders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) exploded a massive truck bomb at the entrance to the Sri Dalada Maligawa killing 13 persons including 2-year old infant and injuring about 25 others.
The temple of the Tooth Relic, the most sacred religious place in Sri Lanka where the tooth relic of the Lord Buddha lies, suffered serious damage due to this bomb explosion.
Exactly after nine years following the LTTEs' ruthless attack at the Temple of the Tooth Relic, perpetrated to wave a communal backslash, the SL government forces rejuvenated history as they liberated Verugal, in the eastern boarders.
The place of both religious and historic significance was liberated by the SL forces after 23 years, thrashing the last LTTE resistance in the east. "Lanka Patuna", at Verugal is believed to be the exact place where Princess Hememala and Prince Dantha was first sighted with the Holy Tooth Relic.
