Congress President Mrs Sonia Gandhi has reiterated the Centre and the Congress party's have been impressing upon the Sri Lankan government to find negotiated settlement to the ethnic problem.
In a letter to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr M. Karunanidhi, Mrs gandhi said it has also been emphasized that a devolution package assuring equal rights to tamils must also been guaranteed.
Expressing deep anguish over the extreme suffering of thousands of innocent Tamils due to the on going conflict, Mrs Gandhi said centre and the Congress party strongly believe that it is necessary for the srilankan authorities to take necessary steps to safeguard and protect their interests.
Mrs. Gandhi said that the Congress party had been espousing the cause of tamils in Srilanka for over three decades, urging successive governments in the neighbouring country to ensure that tamils are guaranteed and enjoy equal rights within the framework of a united Sri Lanka.
