Tamil supremacy and Obamas
D. S. Senanayake was the Obama of Sri Lanka. He was a Sinhala Buddhist by “birth” though a pundit may question as to whether he was a Buddhist when he was born. D. S. Senanayake though a Buddhist at least had to please the Christian British Raj and the agents if he was not a Christian by culture...Obama the black was accepted as the President of America because he was an American belonged to the Christian culture who stood for the values of America as judged by the American Christians that included the whites. D. S. Senanayake, a Sinhala Buddhist was acceptable to the British and their agents in Sri Lanka because he stood for the British Christian values.
There are many anti Sinhala Buddhist elements who hail the victory of Obama as a victory for the blacks in USA, the democratic set up and upholding of human rights in that country. These elements do not stop at singing hosannas to the democracy as practiced in USA but try to attack what they call Sinhala Buddhist supremacy in Sri Lanka. Most of these people are not ordinary Sinhala Christians (RC or non RC) and ordinary Tamils (Hindu or Christian) but those Sinhala Christians and Tamils who enjoyed privileges under their favourite British Christian Raj. Some of them tolerated the independence from the British when the power was transformed from the westerners to a western educated English speaking culturally Christian UNP regime that did not want to change the status quo. These people were educated in the schools that were created by the British to produce clerks and glorified clerks in the name of civil servants and some skilled people in Technology that included practitioners in western medicine, and the other category that were called professionals namely the lawyers, and a few academics who could not create any concepts or theories but were good at "presenting" what they had gathered in a jargon that had to be studied.
They lived in a world of their own without realizing that it was artificial, not compatible with the history of the country, and maintained by the western Christian hegemony. The Sinhala Buddhists were not given any status and the Sinhala educated people like my father could become only teachers, public notaries or peons in the so called public service. The Sinhala (or Aurvedic) physicians could not become public servants ass there were no cadre positions for them in the government hospitals.
The English educated, the majority of them being non Sinhala Buddhists though the Sinhala Buddhists constituted about seventy percent of the population, ruled the country not only in politics but in other places as well. In the public service the Sinhala Buddhists did not constitute seventy percent, especially in the higher positions. The University College and later the University of Ceylon did not make an exemption and the science based faculties were notorious in this connection. Though there was nobody to ask the Sinhala Buddhists to travel third class in the railways nor there were separate busses for the Sinhala Buddhists it was theoretically the same as in the case of blacks in the USA. It is true that D. S. Senanayake a Sinhala Buddhist became the Head of the Board of Ministers in the State Council and later the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, but it did not change the status of the Sinhala Buddhists in the country. Though it is known that in heart D. S. Senanayake was a villager in practice he had to please the western Christian modernity and its agents.
In a sense D. S. Senanayake was the Obama of Sri Lanka. He was a Sinhala Buddhist by "birth" though a pundit may question as to whether he was a Buddhist when he was born. D. S. Senanayake though a Buddhist at least had to please the Christian British Raj and the agents if he was not a Christian by culture. He may have been a nobody who became a somebody but he could not have become a somebody if he did not belong the correct culture. In fact he played the role of a somebody meaning somebody acceptable to the western Judaic Christian culture and Greek Judaic Christian Chinthanaya even more than whose parents had been somebody. If he was not somebody acceptable to the western Christian culture there was no way that he could have become the somebody he was.
Obama was of mixed parentage his father being a Muslim. He was nobody to begin with but he became somebody in the USA. The million dollar question is how he became a somebody in the American society. It was not difficult and he knew how to do it. He became a Christian at a very early age and more than anything else embraced the American Christian culture to the fullest extent. He had been to the correct colleges (in Sri Lanka it was to the correct schools) and knew how to speak and what to speak. He was acceptable to the American Christian society and the Americans did not make a big fuss over the colour of his skin. It was a case of acceptability more than anything else. Just as D. S. Senanayake did not do much for the Sinhala Buddhists Obama will not have much to deliver to the blacks in the USA.
Though D. S. Senanayake was elected by the people he was acceptable to the western Christian British Raj and their agents from the very beginning. In fact the British had been instrumental in giving our leaders and all that we had to do was to elect somebody acceptable to the British Raj. We have had no leaders of ours since the 1817-18 independence struggle was defeated by the British in a bloodbath. The traditional leaders were massacred by the British and a handful of leaders were given privileges when they took the side of the British. In 1848 we had no leaders and had to resort to a sort of make up leadership in Puran Appu and Gongalegoda Banda.
Obama the black was accepted as the President of America because he was an American belonged to the Christian culture who stood for the values of America as judged by the American Christians that included the whites. D. S. Senanayake, a Sinhala Buddhist was acceptable to the British and their agents in Sri Lanka because he stood for the British Christian values. The Sinhala Buddhists had no choice in the matter as they had to elect him as the Prime Minister as he appeared to be nationalistic than the Marxists. In opposition to D. S. Senanayake the people had the Marxists and needless to say that they did not represent the Sinhala Buddhists nor had they embraced the Sinhala Buddhist culture.
In hindsight we could even say that the British did not mind giving universal franchise to Sri Lanka before granting the same to any other colonial country as they were confident of the leaders that they had produced for the Sinhala people. However, it was clear that the Sinhala Buddhists were not happy with what was going on especially after 1948, as from 1815 they had been fighting to oust the British and give the Sinhala Buddhist culture its due place in the country. With S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike quitting the UNP the Sinhala Buddhists sensed that there was a chance of giving Sinhala Buddhist culture its due place in the country. The Sinhala Buddhists now had their own Obama in Bandaranaike and he was acceptable to them as their leader and later as the Prime Minister. Bandaranaike had become a Buddhist in the process and had appeared to have become a Sinhala Buddhist in culture.
