Before R. Premadasa was elected as the President of the country, the JVP supported him to send back the Indian peace keeping force. However, that was one of Premadasa's election promises and he did it with the fullest support from JVP after being elected.
Did the JVP support the Premadasa government in return? No. First, the JVP organized general strikes with the view of destabilizing the country's economy. They used University students and the Maha Sanga for their dirty political atrocities, which heavily penalized the education and careers of the students and some of them had to pay for it with their lives. Universities were shut down indefinitely. As a habit, the LTTE terrorists are targeting child soldiers for their survival. Likewise, the JVP is always targeting poor University students and young Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka for their political survival. 99 per cent of those victims are Sinhala Buddhists. Has the JVP done any good to the Sinhala Buddhists other than misleading them and feeding their lives to anti national and foreign elements. Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country, but can you expect any good for Buddhism from these bankrupt Marxist JVP theologists? Further, the JVP has driven a wedge between Arts & Science faculty students by preaching Samajawadaya and creating jealousy amongst them. Most of those Samajawade Sahodarayas forget their Samajavadaya after they leave the Universities and get married to a Mudalali's daughter. This has been going on for generations.
The JVP did not stop at that in 1988/89. They took the law of the land into their hands and went on imposing curfew in certain areas (it was known as JVP curfew), threatened to shut down government departments, factories and other establishments for a number of days causing heavy losses to the poor people and the economy. Any person who did not obey their demands was severely punished or brutally murdered. A number of public properties were razed to the ground. What did JVP achieve? Did they achieve any political gains? No. Finally thousands of poor Sri Lankans, mostly Sinhala Buddhists (99%) attached/semi attached to the JVP were killed by the then UNP government's killing machine, in a bid to put a full stop to JVP terrorism.
This was a repeat of the JVP's 1971 drama hardly a year after Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike was elected to power. If you take the sequence of the JVP past operations, you will see that once they get an opportunity they will never give breathing space to any leader. Classic examples are the Sirimavo and Premadasa eras.
Last week, the JVP student union organized a protest, in the University of Aesthetic Studies, boycotting lectures and keeping lecturers under illegal house arrest for nearly 20 hours. One lecturer was not even allowed to go for his cardiology appointment. Dean of the faculty, Prof. Jayasena Kottegoda, in a press release had stated how badly they were treated by those JVP-backed student thugs. What are they trying to do now? Repeating the same mistake's as in the past?
The JVP supported Mahinda Rajapakse at the last presidential election. They fully endorsed the Mahinda Chinthanaya but hardly a year after President Rajapakse took office, the JVP had technically withdrawn its support and ventured on a fault finding mission of the Rajapakse government, mainly for cheap political gain.
The JVP blames the Rajapakse government for corruption and the high cost of living. Can you expect a perfect government within a year? Is the JVP a perfect political party? Didn't JVP worked with former President CBK, enjoying all ministerial comforts, when CBK ran a fully corrupt government? Was cost of living low then? Why didn't they call for a general strike at that time, if they were really concerned about the poor masses? When there is a war to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the country, it is not possible to keep the cost of living low in any country. Once these separatist terrorists are defeated, 50% of the country's problems will be solved and the country will develop fast in every aspect.
The JVP's real colours come out slowly while our heroes are claiming historic victories in the East. They are going back to the same mistakes which they made in the horrific period of 1988/89 . If JVP truly loves our security forces and the country, they will never try to destabilize the economy by calling general strikes, sabotaging our University administration etc, at this crucial juncture. It is a proven fact that the Norwegians, Pro-LTTE INGO/NGOs, anti national forces, some treacherous elements in the UNP and some western countries are trying their best to destabilize the Sri Lankan economy. Does the JVP want to join that bandwagon?
At the moment, President Rajapakse is genuinely doing his best to wipe out terrorism from our Motherland and save her from the traitors. We should fortify and direct him on the correct path. Otherwise, INGO/NGOs and UNP culprits, anti national and separatist elements will approach him as his saviours. Veteran JVP politician and the most knowledgeable from the party Nandana Gunatillaka has shown some positive signs of supporting Mahinda Rajapakse in this most needed hour. But the JVP hierarchy is trying to block it and has marginalized him. Sensible members of the JVP should support Nandana Gunatillaka's move.
It is the responsibility of people like Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera and Prof. Nalin de Silva to advice the JVP to take the correct measures for the country. They have been on the JVP bandwagon for quite some time now. Dr. Amarasekera and Prof. de Silva garlanded the National Ideology (Jathika Chinthanaya) of the JVP expecting them to take it into their hearts. For some reason, Nalin and Dr. Amarasekera did not want to join hands with the true national forces in Sri Lanka to execute the Jathika Chinthanaya. All good thoughts push backwards, when someone's Kuhaka Kama controls the mind. It is high time now that Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera and Prof. Nalin de Silva direct the JVP on the right path or leave their band wagon prior to the JVP dumping them as they did to Wickramabahu in 2001.
Our country is still struggling to overcome the current crisis. We have achieved little and we have to do a lot. President Rajapakse is courageously giving the political leadership to achieve our goal. Unlike past leaders, he has volunteered his brother Gotabaya and son Yoshitha to save the nation. We can see our President is fully committed to save our country. Most Sri Lankans and overseas patriots, have extended their fullest support to President.
We must leave all dirty politics aside and unite to develop Mother Lanka.
