LG KE850 Prada and Samsung F700 to Attack Apple’s iPhone

While Apple Computer is preparing the commercial launch of its iPhone in mid-year, South Korea-based producers of cell phones – LG Electronics and Samsung – already have something to offer instead, targeting those who demand style and those looking for advanced functionality. Ironically, both phones with touchk-screens instead of keyboards use operating system (OSs) from Microsoft, a company whose OSs have been considered as competitors by Apple.

LG KE850 Prada phone was developed by LG Electronics and Prada fashion house and is positioned to replace LG’s Chocolate phone in the stylish segment. Just like Apple’s iPhone, the LG Prada features touch-screen instead of keyboard and 2MP built-in camera, comes with music player that can playback MP3, ACC, ACC+, WMA and RA files, a video player compatible with MPEG4, H.263 and H.264 formats as well as document viewer and messaging center. Since LG’s Prada phone is based on Windows Mobile operating system, finding additional software for it should be easy enough. Moreover, usually world-class manufacturers provide coupons to buy necessary programs from third parties.

LG KE850 Prada

Just like the iPhone, LG KE850 Prada also does not feature 3G connectivity and lacks Wi-Fi support, unlike the rival. In addition, being designed to be a media player on the first place, iPhone features 4GB or 8GB of memory; while created to be a stylish phone, KE850 Prada sports microSD cards. However, LG Prada is much smaller and lighter than the iPhone: 98.8 x 54 x 12mm and 85g versus 115 x 61 x 11.6mm and 135g.

Samsung’s F700 phone – which is also based on Windows Mobile – sports even more impressive technical features compared to LG’s Prada. The F700 sports 5MP built-in cam, GSM, EGDE and 3G compatibility, touch-screen and, most importantly, a fully-featured QWERTY keyboard, which remains hidden until it is really needed. As a result, customers can enjoy both Windows Mobile operating system with all of its benefits in addition to new and interesting usage models that touch-screen provides. Moreover, due to the lack of large flash storage, Samsung F700 is smaller than even LG’s Prada with measurements of 104x50x16.4mm.

Samsung F700

Just like the iPhone, LG KE850 Prada and Samsung’s F700 are not going to be really affordable: the fashion house-branded phone will cost around €600 ($700), whereas the F700 from Samsung may have even a bit higher price tag, according to some reports. Nevertheless, those prices are without contracts and considering the fact that Korean manufacturers are very aggressive in terms of price slashes, it is highly likely that those prices will get lower by the end of the year, or early in 2008.

It should also be kept in mind that LG launches its Prada in Q1 and Q2 in Asia, Europe and the U.S., Samsung is projected to release its F700 in Q3 across the world, whereas Apple only plans U.S. release its iPhone in mid-2007, while Asian and European customers will see the phone that will be sold for $499 - $599 with contract in the U.S. sometimes in late-2007 or early-2008.

Yes, Apple is very price competitive. Not to mention how elegant looking it is.
