Save the Children, an international NGO operates in the Island expresses its deep concerns over the misappropriation of its aid by the LTTE terrorists. Referring to the recovery of few life jackets inside an LTTE boat, by SL Navy on Monday the 13th of February, Save the Children says that the LTTE has misappropriated the Tsunami aid donated to the civilians.
Following is the full text of the media communiqué‚ released by the INGO:
Save the Children in Sri Lanka is deeply concerned that its donations for Tsunami affected citizens have been once again used for violent activities. The finding of four floating life jackets donated by Save the Children to tsunami affected people, in an LTTE boat raises further concern about the affected population being deprived of humanitarian assistance.
In its Tsunami relief efforts, Save the Children obliged a request from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DOFAR) to distribute 400 boats along with accessories; fishing nets, boxes, transistor radio, torch light and life saving floating jackets. These donations were given according to a list of beneficiaries provided by DOFAR and fishermen societies, with the intention of helping fishing families to improve their family income so that their children can stay with family and receive an education. These items were distributed to affected families in Batticaloa, Ampara, Kilinochchi and Matara districts. Save the Children deplores the misappropriation of the aid given in partnership with Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
It is unacceptable that people have been deprived of aid items. Save the Children continues to urge all parties to respect all humanitarian laws in times of conflict, and to refrain from using humanitarian aid for military activities.
