AMD cooking up external PCIe graphics cards?

According to a report by The Inquirer, AMD is in the process of developing an external graphics solution for notebooks. The idea isn't particularly new—Asus showed off an ExpressCard-based external graphics module for notebooks at CES last month—but The Inq says AMD's design will rely on the recently-completed external PCI Express specification. External PCIe supports external PCIe x16 connections with the same bandwidth as internal PCIe x16 slots, which could theoretically allow notebook users to use the fastest graphics cards out there with no bottlenecks. AMD's external solution is code-named Lasso, and The Inq suggests that it will be available with the company's upcoming R600 graphics processors. The site goes on to say that AMD may even offer external CrossFire dual-card setups before the summer.

yeah..they will need to cool the inside too.Almost all the turion64 laps I touched gets heated verywell.Too athlon XPs..

How many people use them as laptops these days. Most of them use them on the desktop. :)
I don't think heat is directly related to it. It's not easy to use them on your laptop ne? :D

I like the idea of externalizing the graphics board. However i'd prefer a general (non-proprietary) solution with a standardized chassis where you would plug the boards you would normally put inside your PC.

This would keep the heat from the graphics board away from the cpus (which are finally getting back to normal power consumption and heat dissipation) and it would make upgrading the graphics board easier (no more need to unplug half of the cables attached to your mainboard).

However proprietary solutions might be even easier for most people, you could swap them like you do with usb devices.

We usuall y use on our laps..But still majority of the time they r on the desks..
If you are at home or at office, you tend to use them on desktop. Only if you are moving (by car or bus), you use them on laptop.

well i dont like laptops at all, its hard to fix problems and hard to upgrade as well, well u have to get a new system rather than buying componnnants and upgrading it , since 1993 I have been havin AMD's

I doo agree that the AMD Atholon XP gets quite heated up, well that was in ma HP machine, the fact was that the power supply was generating lots of heat, so i changed the power supply and now its pretty cool! :)

I use AMDs since 2002.Since day one.The old K6s and Athlons get heated but not now.It was like ages ago.

This will look like another system unit (CPU) adding to the inconvenience of wasted desk space. LCD monitors managed to free up space used by those giant CRTs. But I'll admit that the solution will work for keeping the heat out of the CPU.

I don't use my laptop on the lap because I can't get used to the "scratchpad". I always use a small mouse with it. So I need to have a flat surface for the mouse to run.
These days those portable computers are called notebooks instead of laptops.:lol:

There was a similar fear about vibrating mobile phones.:D One of my friends is still afraid to have his cell in his trouser pocket.:lol:
