Home Express - Upto 512 kbps(Down)/Upto 128 kbps (Up) - 2,250.00
Office Express - Upto 2048 kbps(Down)/Upto 512 kbps(Up) - 6,750.00

These prices are Excluding VAT.

So even for a domestic user or a student, the internet cost will be more than 31,000 a year, that's about half a pc every year!

Isn't this sort of too expensive???...

Nope. I don't think any other country offers cheaper ADSL connections. (Remember, this is with no quota - that's a real plus point)

Make some living out of it man :D
You would have found one, if you had to pay for it on your own. Since your parents are paying for it, you don't have to.

And remember how much you are saving. You don't have to rent a DVD anymore, but a CD/DVD anymore. You can download anything an everything instead.

You know, to give ADSL, you have to be a telecom company (not just an ISP) + use wired loops. Only SLT has a wired network.

I don't think Dialog can do it for Rs.2,250 a month. Maybe their speeds will be higher, but still I don't think they can go against the submarine cables with satellite transmission. Satellite transmission is very, very expensive.

Yeah at the moment SLT is the only broadband provider but even if Dialog starts up then I guess Dialog would probably be a bit more expensive than SLT. Anyway it all depends on how they charge their tariffs whether by how long you surf or how much you download or maybe they'll charge a monthly rental like SLT.

I don't think they will charge a fixed amount. It will most probably be on usage, or there will be tight restrictions on the downloadable amount.

Not really... it isn't that expensive! because that would be the normal price you would pay for a 2MB connection and you can't just measure the value of it by thinking that you are spending more than 31k per year,

And you are getting a 2MB connection when you need more bandwidth and the current bandwidth is not enough for you to do your work!

2MB is relatively a fest connection so you gotta pay as much!

And a 2MB connection is easily sharable among your family or friends so you can share if you want to!

I don't think so! because as I know Singapore has 10MB connections for 68 Singapore Dollars that's roughly converted to around Rs. 4760/= (with free wireless modem)

Even Malaysia 2MB connection is around Rs. 5828/= (with free modem)

Dude, I wasn't talking about the Wireless broadband connection alone. It's not that part which is expensive.

Let's say Dialog wants to give wireless broadband connection. They have to use the satellite links to access their foreign ISPs (very expensive because satellite transmission is heavily limited in bandwidth) or they have to use the submarine cables owned by SLT (which I doubt they'll use, if they do, SLT will ask for a good price).

If SLT want to give wireless broadband, they don't have such restrictions, because they own the submarine cable + they have a wide fibre optic coverage.

Yeah! I mean think about it... you were using a dial-up which gives you nothing at all...paying 1500 per month this is good for those people who just needs to check mail... But not for us cuz, we do all sorts of things downloading, browsing (hours non-stop), streaming (Youtube)

I pay about Rs.2730/= for my 1MB connection here, and I think that is a good deal because that's what I can afford right now with all my other expenses and I'm always connected!!

Maybe one day when Sri Lanka launch its own Satellite things could get cheaper!!;) ;) ;)   :) :) :)

Yeah! but there were a lot of success factors behind mobile phones industry though, like starting off on a decent mobile phone doesn't cost you much where as getting a broadband connection & making full use of it requires a PC, which normally cost more!

I think becoming an ISP should be a part of Dialog's plan for future service enhancement for their mobile sector as well... which is a good thing!! Because the next generation 3G/4G technologies like HSDPA means really high data rates on mobile phones!!!

And you might see in Sri Lanka.... in another 2/3 years time (could be less) people replacing their mobile phones with PDA's which has more functionalities like GPRS!!

Mobile phone tariffs are too high even still. I think they can give a 1 minute for less than Rs.1 and still make a hell of a lot of profit from it.

Now take Mobitel. They only have two sites. One is the head office where none of the systems are and the engineering division with all the system equipment is in Welikada. Two switches. All the others are towers + small unmanned base stations.
Now take SLT. They have exchanges over over the country. The have to maintain the wired network which is pretty hard work. They have had to invest a lot on the optical ring and the the submarine cables. Remember, they have microwave transmission for certain areas as well, but this is very cheap - hardly any maintenance costs.

If you take consider all these, SLT can't be profitable in the area of telephones. But they are!! A lot in fact!. Then imagine how profitable Mobitel is with very less maintenance costs, higher tariffs and all that.

Hehe. The device can work that fast. But I don't think the connections will be that fast. Besides, the ADSL routers most people use nowadays support ADSL2+ up to 24Mbps, and it doesn't make us feel better since the connections are so slow.

24Mbps for what purpose??
Meke data transfer rate eka keeyada
