Its dictionary database is completely & illegally copied from THIBUS. The real makers of this dictionary definitions would have spent years of time to complete it and this man has robbed it without any fear and put it in a crappy piece of software (which would involve few minutes of coding) and showing off as if he were the author. If this happened in a Western country this fellow would have been in jail. Not only this dictionary the following Sinhala English Dictionaries too use the very same database illegally copied from THIBUS: Chatura English Sinhala Dictionary - by Chatura Dilan Perera Vidudaya Popup Dictionary - A M R Ravimal Bandara If you just check these dictionaries you will notice that all of them have the very same definitions. Its unfortunate to see that these things continue to happen in Sri Lanka.

The data of Chatura Sinhala English Dictionay is based on EnsiTip which is distribute under GNU/GPL license and the Sinhala English Dictionay itself is distribute under GNU/GPL. and it was design to overcome of the EnsiTip which cannot convert Sinhala words to English

madura may be took Definiton Database. But he offer Software Free. So No Need GNU Problem, MADHURA English-Sinhala Dictionary is great help people who working with english on the computer, Specially people who havent enough english knowledge. So MADHURA English-Sinhala Dictionary reduce fear to working people in - front of the computers with english. So don't hate Free sinhala Software that help much more to our community. Nation should mortivate people like MADURA and we must appriciate him

Well, all of the following dictionaries have the very same definitions (Dont say "great minds think alike"!!)

The fact is that this dictionary database was originally developed (& owned) by THIBUS software. And all the above sources have illegally copied the database from THIBUS including EnSiTip. Any one can rob someone else's property and republish under GNU/GPL. If this database is issued under GNU/GPL it is mandatory that it is publicly available for anyone to download. But this dictionary database is NOT publicly available and in fact property of THIBUS.

You seem to be the author of Chatura Dictionary, if so where did you get this dictionary database? And if you make it under GPL, have you made it available to the general public?

I have to tell that, I havent touch anything from Thibas software, even I dont have that software and even I dont know Thibas have that kind of database.
I told you that how I got data.
People are using Ensitp for more than two years now and its very popular among Sri Lankans.
So why you people make copyright claims for it after two years. There is somthing suspicious thing going on here against Sinhala English Dictionaries.

Ensitip creators never want to make it GNU/GPL if they have a illegal database because it is done by Language Research Center. Every people who use Sinhala unicode know about it. They distributed it under GNU/GPL respecting its laws.
I never believe that they get data from Thibas illegally.

So why do you people did for these two years... sleep? till all dictionaries become popular among people.

So what happen to Thibas, many people dont know that there is a dictionary called Thibas

However if something is proprietary the creator of that program should take necessary steps to protect their data, source form leaking to the public (such as encrypting the data) before distribute.
They notice that their data is leaked after two years.

How can we believe????????????

But I have seen Thibus dictionary (this is not free) and also Madura dictionary (this is free! cool!) and these have similar (or the same) definitions. In my opinion if something is GPL then source must be available for any interested person(natalia2009 is right there). If you (chatura) say you got it from Language Research Center (i think you refer to colombo university school of computing) you should specifically disclose how he got it because no such dictionary is available for download in their site (http://www.ucsc.cmb.ac.lk/ltrl/?page=downloads&lang=en&style=default ). If you want to prove that you didnt illegally get it from EnSiTip why dont you specifically disclose whom you contacted to get this database? If this is under GPL anyone else too must be able to get it in the same way you got it!

Another thing that you say that it is developers responsibility to encrypt the database to avoid the possible leak. You are dead right but even if it is not so no one can legally copy it without permission of the copy right holder. Otherwise there is no need of law in the country!!

There is no illegally copying from GNU/GPL licensed software, since they are giving the source with it. you'd better to read GNU/GPL license schema first.

Well this firefox extention says "Data is from University of Colombo School of Computing" and here say you got it from EnsiTip. You have used the same data for your (?) desktop dictionary and also the online dictionary (srilankeeya.com with adsense running) So if you get the data from a GPLed software all others need to be GPL. So under what license did you release these? But no mention about GPL on any of these. Besides, on the desktop version you shamelessly say "Developed by Chatura Dilan" Just disgusting!! Well developers of this database spent years of time to do it and now you have put it into a crappy bit of coding and showing as if you were the author. (If you just Google anyone will find hundreds of much better open source projects) Also you say that Thibus could have copied data from EnSiTip. You must know that Thibus dictionary was first introduced in 1995 and it was the first of its kind. Sundry buggers like ensitip, madhura, chatura, kathura etc. etc. would have been pissing in their pants by that time!

How it's a crappy code if the whole community get advantage from it and every one thank for developing that software?

The users have freedom to do anything if something distribute under GNU/GPL. even can sell the new versions which i dont like to do.


The desktop version is developed my myself using C#.NET and I get the data from a GNU/GPL project. how it's disgusting to use 'developed by Chatura Dilan Perera'? i dont mentioned that it is copyrighted to me.

And srilankeeya.com, i got data from a GNU/GPL project. Do i need to mention how i got data? is it a violation of GNU/GPL terms?

I'm telling this with confidence because I have not done any illegal thing here.

however due to inability of thibus people the data might have been leaked. i dont know the full story about the data who hacked it or is their any alliance.

Every people in Sri Lanka get the advantage out of the data now. and it is also a merit for the people who get years to enter data (as you say) than hide it somewhere with no use of them. i havent heard about the thibus dictionary till you people say.

now the best thing is make that data under GNU/GPL license. so every people will use that data and new products can be introduced to the community from it.
