It was reported in newspapers that the Farmer's Federation consisting of 15 organisations had protested in front of the Fort Railway Station against privatising water resources.
President Rajapaksa had categorically stated that water resources will not be privatised in Sri Lanka as long as he remains the President. Similar sentiments have been expressed by Ministers with portfolios linked to water. Recently appointed Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources Hon. Champika Ranawaka , himself a well known advocate against privatising water resources had echoed the President's views publicly. However, all these guarantees seem not to be sufficient for the farmers (or to the cats paw behind them) as they vented their spleen in front of the Fort Railway Station shouting slogans demanding the impossible such as the abolishment of Government departments in particular, the Water Resources Secretariat.
Recent weeks have seen treacherous organisations like the Free Media Movement shouting slogans in front of the Fort Railway Station directing the Government to release Southern terrorists camouflaging as media personnel operating hand in glove with the Tamil Tiger terrorists. We salute our intelligence service personnel for their timely action, saving the peace loving people from the mayhem these traitors were getting ready to unleash. When one looks closely at these so called protesting farmers, strangely they are uniformed wearing black loin cloths and black caps. The homogeneity of their attire and the orchestration that had gone at the site for the distribution of hand bills gives rise to suspicion as to how many of these protesters were authentic farmers and how many of them were there to embarrass the President; as he was blamed for scheming to privatise Sri Lanka's water resources?
SPUR cautions the authentic protesters not to be duped by either LTTE friendly NGOs or opportunistic political parties whose considered strategy is to migrate from one issue to another creating chaos for the Government. Their strategy is to weaken the President and try and grab power. The LTTE supports this tactics as it distracts the Government from continuing with its winning military ways in the East. The protester's must not fall in to a trap such as the one that has been sprung on the Free Media Movement, where the organisation has lost credibility with its leaders accused of being in LTTE's pay as they were seeking the release of Southern terrorists accused of very serious crimes against the Nation.
It is incumbent on all civil organisations to strengthen the President at a time that he has lead the Nation in the fight to defeat LTTE's terrorism. The East will be cleared soon and we look forward to liberating the Tamil brothers and sisters held hostage by Parabakaran in a few pockets in the North.
Civil unrest at this juncture only benefits the LTTE and anti-patriotic organisations and political parties working closely in partnership to undermine the President. If authentic farmers have genuine concerns, Minister's and their Secretaries would listen to their issues and where possible, address them guided by directions espoused in the Mahinda Chinthanaya. That is the current Government's modus operandi.
There is no need for street protests as at present, we need to focus on eliminating the LTTE from the East first and then the North. Privatising Water resources in Sri Lanka, an Asian first is a red herring distracting the Government from the main game. One should question who would benefit from such ill-timed actions? Would it be the LTTE or a political party that is drifting leaderless and rudderless towards oblivion? SPUR's thesis is that we can not differentiate between perpetrators of treachery. They should all be condemned universally. .
Hence SPUR urges the civil society not to be duped and be vigilant, and avoid supporting LTTE friendly forces in the South who directly and indirectly support separatism and terrorism.
