Yeah... Me too... I mean for personal use it's sufficient but when it comes to gaming, well... linux isn't the best solution ne! Still I think Linux will do for me... I use Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.org/) sometimes (Right now I'm posting this in knoppix), to make the possible change from windows less unfamilier!

I think the world trend is towards open-source so I believe that we will see many improvements in open-source software in the recent future... It's not only because of the low cost (most of the time they are free) but also because of the dramatic features they incorporate!
Did u ppl hear abt the recently held LinuxAsia 2007 (http://www.linuxasia.net/la07/index.php)?
Mmm......
Ekak kiyala Ne.
Wela Yana athata Messa Gahanawa... :D:D:D

Moving into Linux is the best choice.. because Linux can customize whatever you want if you know how to do... I have seen people of LUG programming Linux faster than Windows loading..

And look how hard it is to install a driver or a software in Linux.
Linux is good but still not for normal user, if you are a power user then you can manage that but as typical user you will have to face lot of trouble. There are solutions for that but it takes lot of learning time and practice.

linux ppl have begun portin windows games..havnt u ppl heard of it/??..it's cool Quake 4, Max Payne II n sum other games r now fully ported(i mean u can run the windows exe in linux) ..go search for linux games believe me-- da results r goood.. i think dat Linux game development would b a pain in da a** for hardware vendors n gaming companies..coz most of linux games r free..yup and da rest u can port frm windows..directly..sure dat linux is harder to understand than windows but whts earned hard is better..

Well, linux varients like ubuntu install almost all drivers. In my previous machine, my sound card (ALS400) drivers were automatically installed by neither 98 nor xp, but ubuntu did it along with all other drivers (except for modems)... If you want to try Linux, just test the latest knoppix live version! No one can say that it's not user friendly!
But as far as laws are'nt tough, I'll remain with windows!

In linux distros almost all the drivers come built in and dont have to change much in the versions or upgrade hardware for the changing versions. And u can use wine to run exes in linux. Its free.

It's the same thing with Windows. In Linux, you earn things the hard way by eating up your time. In Windows, you earn things the hard way by eating up hundreds of dollars. Same thing - hard earnings

But do you like us to be treated like a poor country? I mean, there is a Windows Vista Starter Edition for the poor countries. Either you can buy it and save our money, or you cam buy a normal edition and say that we are not as poor as they think we are, or we can pirate them and stay unnoticed (don't say, go screw yourself Micro$oft, because we are the ones who are doing the wrong thing)

I think we discussed this issue before!
Anyway the main selling point and the strong point in Windows was the user interface by doing so they slowly but surely became such a force and now dominating the world,
there is no way a normal user can survive in LINUX... that's for sure unless they adopt Window's tactics and make LINUX more user friendly... if they do it.. it wont be LINUX anymore would it?
Windows will domain for sometime to come at least another decade!!!
NOW!! which technology is more steady... is another issue!!!!

Windows got more security flaws than LINUX..
This actually has 2 perspectives as I see it
1. The Problem in Architecture
In softwares like LINUX / UNIX there is a fine line drawn between the user levels and administrator levels, with compared to Windows.. What i mean is in Window anyone can run .exe/ .dll files that can contain malicious stuff.. but in Linux you'll have to be a root user to do this... so it makes the knowledgeable person does the rough handling... even in Windows they have admin/guest privileges guest's still can add programs that may has sort of .dll files or .exe that causes a system crash!!
Simple example is your Outlook & Thunderbird, Oulook is -you know who's technology- while Thunderbird is actually based on Linux mail clients!! And you google around to check about Outlook flaws "be my guest"!!!
I remember in some white paper I read Windows is known to more than 50,000 viruses world wide where as LINUX and UNIX is only in 2 digits!! Another reason for this is number of systems that's been connected through Windows!!
2. The number of people who uses it
This purely based on popularity take Outlook still large number of people using it because its bundled with Windows for free... and anyone who needs to test a spy ware attack would test with the software that most people uses!! To make it become more effective.... So in anybodies eye's Outlook is the target....
Where as very few people uses Linux and Unix systems, so why make your butt get torned for 2 cents?

3D Max 2012 is $3495 which is around Rs. 400000/- not 120K.
There are open source software for 3D modeling. Just like you learned to use 3D max, you have to learn to use them as well.
BTW, who dragged this ancient thread up ?

well i t depends on your use. i mean if you are a normal user with net browsing and office app works and other simple stuff linux or fedora will suit you and far more economical........
but if you are a power user with multimedia entertainment and heavy gaming no use of linux.....it sucks there....
and most importanty if you have a high end computer, whats the use of linux becoz in most modern GPU's are designed to work with Direct x and technologies like nvidia optimus for power serving is not going to work on linux...and no proper support for power management.
so to work with most day today needs go with windows.....

If you are talking about efficiency and latest use of hardware and technologies you should use linux, not windows man :growl::growl::growl::growl: ..... windows takes ages to support these technologies
ex: USB3, 64-bit computing, power efficient kernel threading etc.. etc...
This is why super computers and other new machines use linux....:lol::lol::lol:
Windows is always late in adopting cutting-edge techs, and usually it takes a lot of bug fixing for months to get it right; but never good as linux

well its obvious that this is not a case for a super computer here....or a server... and linux may support ur so called technologies but it doesn't use for a Home gaming or media PC....
and kernel threading is a different case and most importantly by handling threads by kernel takes lots of overhead which is unnecessary for a home PC...its good in sec. vise but no use for this case.....
