Narrow escape for Minister Samarasinghe and ambassadors

Five people injured when LTTE fired a mortar attack on Batticaloa helipad when a helicopter carrying a VIP delegation that included Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, US Ambassador Robert O’Blake and several other diplomats was about to land.
Initial reports indicated that Mr Samarasinghe did not suffer any injuries. However some others in the group were injured. The helicopter was also damaged. This incident took place at about 8.45 this morning.
On earlier occasions the LTTE has attacked vehicles and boats carrying Scandinavian SLMM delegates endangering their lives. This is the first attack on an ambassador. This is also the first assassination attempt of a minister after the LTTE killed former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.
