Ven. Siridigane Sirithilakasiri Thero, the Registrar of Ampara Shasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya and representative of ‘Organization to Protect Heritage of Digamadulla’ said as a result of the activities carried out by the quarry Veddha frescoes belonging to pre-historic era have been damaged. He said the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Commissioner of Archeology and District Secretary for Ampare were informed regarding the destruction of the historical cave but no action has been taken.
Evidence regarding pre-historic human activities exists in the area and allowing such valuable historical and cultural heritage to be devastated is a national crime as well as a disgrace to the modern human civilization as well as the future society. The historical facts that exist here cannot be found anywhere else nor could they be created. Hence, it is the responsibility of all patriots to safeguard the historic Piyangala Hermitage and the cave.
