Surely most of you have been downloading a movie from various sources and couldn’t help but wonder what kind of quality you were using your precious bandwidth on. Generally this has been a very hard task to do because most movie players will just generate an error message and display a black screen. Some of you might have had some luck with the alpha of avipreview but generally that program has been very unstable. Well, now there is a solution to our problems and it won’t just preview avi files eather. Go over to this link and grab a copy of VLC media player. And best of all, it’s freeware.

Notice that unless the first few seconds of the file is downloaded you probably won’t get a picture but if they are you can freely skip ahead if you are missing a chunk soon after this. VLC will probably also give you a lot of artifacts at the beginning and end of data but this usually go away quickly. When VLC comes to a place where data is missing it will continue to play and just give you a still till it hit’s the next piece of data. This media player also has a lot of codecs built in so if something plays here but not elsewhere that is the reason. VLC does not to my knowledge support Quicktime and RealMedia.
