It was an 18-run defeat, but still it’s a defeat. And, it wasn’t a match with full ODI status, but it’ still a 50 overs match (Which is the format for the World Cup).

No matter what’s the status of the match (official ODI or not), when you win a match against a top favorites for the tournament, just 5 days prior to the official start of the Cricket World Cup 2007, it really is a moral booster for any team.

Kiwis after being beaten by the minnows Bangladesh now may be relieved themselves a bit with this victory.

Sri Lanka on the other hand, now will have to leave this defeat behind them and focus on their next encounter. The match against Bermuda.

Sri Lanka opted to go into this match without their world class opener, Sanath Jayasuriya and top fast bowler Chaminda Vass. May be they wanted to test the worst-case scenario.

The plus points to take from the match are the form of Sri Lanka’s top order. Upul Tharanga once again proven himself as the one who really deserved the “Best up coming ODI player of 2006” award at the ICC Cricket Awards 2006.

He put a 115 opening partnership with Marvan Atapattu, and went on to score a marvelous 106 runs off 112 balls.

Chamara Silva and Russel Arnold got into the runs, but wasn’t able to hold on tight enough.

In the end Sri Lanka fell 18 runs short of New Zealand’s total of 285/8.

I personally believe Kiwi’s as a top favorites for this World Cup. In fact, I rate them above Australia and South Africa.

The result of this match, once again prove the fact that, this world cup is going to be the most competitive Cricket World Cup ever.
Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England, India, Pakistan and West Indies (With home advantage, and the advantage of being under the radar). They all have a chance of becoming the champions. Bangladesh and Kenya. They have the ability of making some shocking results in the tournament!
