Right, you’ve got a K750i back in the day and your were damn pleased with the handset. But then Sony Erricson brought out the W700, then the W800i and many more ridiculous handsets all based on the same design. Wouldn’t it be nice to update your phone to the latest handset?
Well, thanks to the mastermind at fishstench.co.uk and many fine forums (listed at the bottom) I found a way of ‘updating’ your K750i to a W800i with no problems. I also explain the benefits/disadvantages of doing this.
Whilst the information is out there, there is no step by step tutorial that leads you through the process for anyone.
NOTE: IF YOU FUCK UP YOUR PHONE ITS NOT MY FAULT, DO ANY OF THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!.
Upgrading to a W800i: Pros and Cons
Pros
* Louder music volume; built-in speaker and headphones
* The WALKMAN media player; better organised music
* Call quality seems to be slightly better
* Low-light camera shots better (with camera mod)
* Handset worth more; higher resell value
* Free upgrade :D
* Several other technical updates
Cons
* You lose the activity menu, as this button is now used for the WALKMAN screen
* Phone slightly slower (probably just my phone, its was going slow before)
I would only really see this update as necessary for people who listen to music a lot, and this update isn’t really for everyone.
The update is a bit of mission, especially if you want to do it for free. Its technical and theoretically you could end up with a fucked phone (only if you’re a total mong). Fortunately, Steve is to the rescue, and I will lead you through the steps as best as I can.
How to
Step 1:
Get your phone, unlock it (*, right screen button) and press the following keys in order:
Right, *, Left, Left, *, Left, *
A new screen should pop up with, ’Service info, Service tests and Text labels’ on it. Click the ‘Service info’ then ‘Software info’ and then scroll down to the bottom.
Where it says ‘Customisation’ there should be a number below it; e.g. CDA102338/16 there will also be other numbers, but you only want the 8 digit (minus the CDA part) code. This is your CDA code. Write it down, this becomes important later.
Step 2:
Put all of your contacts onto the SIM card so that you don’t lose them. To do this, go to the ‘Contacts’ menu, click ‘Options’ then ‘Advanced’ at the bottom, and then ‘Copy to SIM’ then ‘Copy all’. Your phone will now begin to copy the contacts.
Now get all of your photos off the phones memory, or if you save them on your memory stick; remove the memory stick.
This is all because your phone is going to be wiped in the process of updating.
Step 3:
Before you continue, make sure that your battery is full or at least over 80%. Press the ‘down volume’ button to find out how much battery you have left. Losing battery power during an update will spell disaster…
Get the cable that came with your phone, this is called a DCU-60 cable.
1. Remove the battery and take out the SIM card.
2. Stick the battery back in.
3. Hold down the ‘C’ button.
4. Plug in the DCU-60 into the bottom of the phone *
5. Whilst still holding the ‘C’ button, wait for your PC to pop-up asking for your assistance in installing a ‘Flash’ driver.
6. Click the ‘Connect to Microsoft server’ to get the driver.
You need Windows XP to do this, any other OS is wank and shouldn’t be used.
* You have to have the cable plugged into your PC first. You can’t have the cable plugged into your phone, and then plug it into your PC. I tried and it doesn’t work.
If in step 5 your phone turns on instead of installing a driver, take the battery out and try again from step 2. Eventually it will work.
Step 4:
Download the SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service) program from here. This will update your K750i to the latest version.
Use the program and follow the onscreen instructions. If the program tells you that you have the latest version, then all is well. Otherwise, the program will update your phone to the latest version.
If for some reason it fucks up, retry the program until it works.
If you turn your phone on now, it will hang on the start up screen for a while whilst it faffs around trying to get sense of the new software. Eventually it will start up.
Step 5:
Now you know that your phone is the latest version and that it can be updated.
Download this file.
UPDATE: Changed the version of SEFP to the latest
Unzip the file (install WinRAR and right-click on the file and click ‘Extract files’).
Now there will be 4 folders, ‘FAR manger’, ‘Flasher’, 'Customisation' and ‘Flash files'.
Open up the ‘Flasher’ folder and double-click k750flasher_13.7.exe.
You should now be greeted with a screen looking a little like this:
http://www.fishstench.co.uk/files/updatefone/flasher.jpg
You’ve already installed the USB flash driver earlier (step 3) so ignore that part.
You now want to find the files that you need to update the phone with. Click the ‘…’ by the Main box (this is the actual firmware file) . A dialogue box should appear. Find the folder ‘Flash files’.
http://www.fishstench.co.uk/files/updatefone/flasherchoose.jpg
When the box first appears, there will be no files, you need to click the ‘Files of type:’ box, and select ‘(*.*) All Files’ now two files should appear. Select the ‘W800_R1AA008_MAIN_EU_CID36_BINARY.mbn’ file.
Now click the ‘…’ by the FS (language file) box. Do the same as above, but this time choose ‘W800_R1AA008_FS_EMEA1_CID36_BINARY.fbn’.
Remember when you wrote down your CDA number? Well now is the time to use it. Enter it into the CDA box. It should look like this: ‘CDA102338/16’. There are many CDA’s out there, but I would suggest that you keep the same one. If you want to change it, there are lists on the internet. Do a google for ‘K750i CDA number’ or similar. Its not really important but you still need to remember it for one last step.
Now make sure that the ‘Finalisation’ box is NOT selected. Now hit the ‘Flash’ button.
As before, hold the ‘C’ button and plug in the DCU-60 cable and wait for the Flasher to update your phone. It will take about 10 minutes. I would suggest that you don’t do anything on your PC or touch your phone/cable. If you stop the flashing, something bad will happen and you’ll have to run SEUS again.
Step 6:
Now you have a W800i. YAY! However, if you turn it on, it will give you some crap about how the customisation file is bummed. That’s where the FAR manager comes in.
Find the ‘Customisation’ folder in the zip you downloaded and open the ‘customize.xml’ with notepad (right-click and choose ‘Open with…’, select ‘Notepad’).
Now scroll through the file, and change the following points:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<customization>
<info>

<customization-pm>Steve Parker - fishstench.co.uk</customization-pm>
<pcr-id>22760</pcr-id>
<pcr-revision>RA3</pcr-revision>
<cda-number>CDA102338/16</cda-number>
<cda-revision>R5A</cda-revision>
<model>W750i</model>
<country>United Kingdom</country>
<operator>02</operator>
<language-variant-name>WorldWide</language-variant-name>
Change the ‘<customization-pm>’ to your name or whatever you want. Change the ‘<cda-number>’ to the number you entered into the Flasher program (should be the same as the one you write down in step 1 unless you changed it for a laugh). Change the ‘<country>’ to your country, ‘<model>’ this can be anything, ‘<operator>’ keep this the same as the operator that you are on.
Now save this file.
Step 7:
Find the ‘FAR manager’ folder included with the zip file you downloaded. Double-click the ‘Far.exe’. Now a dos-like window will appear.
Hit ‘F11’ and scroll to ‘SEFP’.
http://www.fishstench.co.uk/files/updatefone/farmanager.jpg
Select it, and the choose ‘DCU-60’ from the Comm Device list
http://www.fishstench.co.uk/files/updatefone/dcu60.jpg
Now follow the on-screen prompts. You have to do the old holding ‘C’ trick again. Again if your phone just turns on, then turn off your phone and try again.
Eventually you’ll get in. Now select ‘FS’ from the file list’ Now a screen will pop up with a load of crap saying its writing. Its not harming your phone don’t worry.
Now go to ‘tpa/preset/custom’ and delete all the files there. Copy all the files from the ‘Customisation’ folder you downloaded to this directory.
Now hit ‘Escape’ and end the connection.
Reinsert your SIM card and your phone is updated!
