Machan im also a APIIT student... the course contents are good... but it depends on the teacher too machan... how much you like the subject if the lecturer screws you up machan kelama thama...
and really you need to do self studying... and i have not gone to any other library :D but APIIT indeed has a great library with loadz of programming/web development/software engineering/algorithms/project management (ok everything related to computing and business) books...
The only downside of APIIT is that it is quite expensive, and its getting too crowded with the new intakes...

Machan believe it or not APIIT eke COM and SE kiyala dekama almost the same...
COM and SE wala subjects dekak thunak ehaata mehaata wenawa... so actually if you do one degree its like you have ALMOST got the other too :)

and SE is all about the logical side of the program... creating efficient programs... its towards designing efficient and effective algorithms side ekata...

COM is all about programming :D.... up to now the stuff we have learned are C, C++, Java, VB .NET (VB and C dannawa kiyanne C# dena gaththa wage thama) so C# ,PHP, JavaScript, CSS
Other softwares we have learned are MS SQL Server, MySQL, Flash and ActionScript, ASP .NET...
But machan mewa mama igena gatta ewa... ASP .NET and C# are languages i learned my self.. so you have to do on your own too :)

PS : Other extra packages include a lot of Counter Strike, NFS, C & C Generals and Zero Hour and loadz and loadz of movies :D

i want to point out two things that i indeed like about APIIT.

First thing is that the formal dress... you cannot come to APIIT with T-shirts, denims, sandals and all other types of casual wear... this will make the students naturally get used to wear formally for the office (when you work )...

2nd is the project submission deadlines... If it is 15th August @ 5pm your deadline , SUBMIT the project before that! Because the projects will not be accepted after that! Well you can submit an EC form, but believe me it is easy to submit the project than go through all that trouble!

Well oops there is 3rd point too, the academic honesty! You do not want to copy from the internet and paste it in your documentation! Proper citing and referencing is very crucial!!!

Guys,
First of all, i ll tell you my experience. I am a final year final semester student in APIIT and yeah, I m following SE for god's sake. The course content is revised one year back so that we are learning the updated modules.
Few of my colleagues are in SLIIT and according to them, it is really worthless and they are following BIT and one fellow is currently reading for the SCBCD after the SCJAP and SCWCD. and they both are tech geeks and really into computing from grade 8-9 onwards. Still they are in SLIIT and seamlessly they got up with the best ranks in their batch. but, still they re not satisfied and in pain about their selection on the past. Seems SLIIT is really loosing their grip with some course quality issues.
What i posted here is true according to the best of my knowledge and no hard feelings to either one of the institutions. seems NIBM is good since they are the only institute which is offering a MIS degree.
anyway, it is your choice to make your own decision after seeing everything by wide opened eyes. and i ll tell you, don't ever go with the cost that you ve to make. Sometimes, it may be the greatest investment that you ve been made in your entire life.

If you want to be a geek at least a expert in what you doing you should not depend on degree. It is simply a bull shit. But it giving a kick to do things most of times establishing a standard in your self. I am final year student in APIIT. Truly here it is excelent except paying 70,000 monthly fee :P. I am getting what I want and I don't know about other universities. Most of people here from computing backgrounds and some one have make them turn to APIIT since it has some value.
But truly I love uom cse.They have excellent set of lecturers and pull for every thing and finally its freeeeeeeeee. :D.
