Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said yesterday that the Sri Lanka Air Force was the best in the world today as it had proved itself in the battle to defeat the LTTE. Dedication, commitment to work and professionalism had helped in that, he said. Deviating from their traditional duties, the Air Force had also assisted in protecting the liberated land and ensuring peace and security, he added.
“With limited resources and hi-tech machines, the Sri Lanka Air Force defeated the LTTE, using their knowledge, skill, experience and commitment. It is the duty of the new officers and airmen to carry this pride of victory unblemished into the future,” he said.
He made these observations when he addressed the newly commissioned officers and passed out airmen at Air Force Base in China Bay, yesterday. He reminded them that it was the prime duty of all those who were passing out to protect the sovereignty of their motherland
Mr. Rajapaksa participated at occasion as the chief guest of the commissioning and wings parade, at which six pilots and ten others were commissioned and 329 regular and volunteer airmen passed out.
Air Force Chief Roshan Goonatilake and a large number of senior and junior officers participated at the event. Parents and family members of the new officers and airmen were a part of the large gathering that witnessed the parade.
At the conclusion of the function, the airmen presented a parade and a parachute jumping display. The personnel passing out also displayed their new skills in foot drill, unarmed combat, and bayonet assault.
