OMFG!!! http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=38348
CORSAIR IS COMING out with faster USB sticks, dubbed Voyager GT. These allegedly indestructible drives are supposed to be so fast, that you can install Windows Vista Home Premium edition in a matter of minutes. Three minutes, to be precise.

It's hard to believe, but I don't think it is a joke. This a reputed website.

Well, flash drives can't beat the price of hard disks. Hopefully those hybrid drives will give us the best of both worlds.

3 Minutes   How Come
Because of the 25 times faster random accessing + the image based Vista installation.
Buy a 16GB model and try installing Vista on it :D

but how is it going faster than the USB 2 data transfer limits ?? Does it use a new USB protocol as well ?

No, no. This is USB 2.0 Hi-speed (what we all know).
Theoretically, Vista installation will be about 6GB, so ~6000MB/60MBps = 100s < less than 2 minutes. But we all know it's not like that. I think it has a lot to do with the way Vista installation is made.

umm isnt that 48000/60MBps = 800s ~ about 13 minutes ?
Data transfer rates are given in bits not bytes..

Why not? Hard disk is the slowest component in the PC. If the access time of flash drives is 25 times better than typical 7200RPM drives, well, we can expect it to install fast. Maybe not exactly 3 minutes. We don't know from which point to which point they counted 3 minutes ne?

Still can't beat the price of magnetic storage. They only cost your around Rs.50-60 per GB.

I have a question
Does that means the delay we are getting at installing is coz of the slow data tranfer speed of our data storage devises?????
But SATA has a grater transfer speed than USB 2.0 ne????
And the read/write speed is also high ne???
So how come we can't install on a SATA in 3 minuets???
What do u guys think about this?

why not people? if u install your OS in a USB(as some of us has already done with linux ;)) you can carry ur desktop + settings + files + apps anywhere u go and plug in your USB and boot! there u have your desktop in that computer.. and all the work u do will be saved to the USB so u can just remove the USB and take asomewhere else and start working from the place you stopped when u left the last place... :)
its mobile, and people already do it with linux distros... i don't know about vista, hey! there is this commercial thing called mojo pack... give it a search.. it does the same thing with XP..

Ahem! Who has a 16GB flash drive?
Yeah, maybe XP.

There's Bart PE. FOSS Windows XP Live CD maker. It can be used to create Windows XP Live environment for a USB stick too.
Only problem is that no many PCs can be booted from a USB stick.
I'm sure Vista can be turned in to a Live CD or DVD as well. It'll not have the loads of eye candy that vista has but only the core system with additional tools to use it as a rescue CD/DVD

hehe.. well if u have a 2GB one... u can carry some 4.5GB of data... in it... with some liveCD like linux environments... with a compressed file system... if not u simply buy a external HD! ;) haha now thats not hard to do??? hehe... and then if u get a 80Gig hard you can get some 160Gig data.. space.. with a compressed file system.. or if u want more speed u can just use the 80Gigs with out any compressing...
but there is a risk when u are using a flash drive... when u run a OS from a flash drive it tend to die very quickly than normally... so better opt for a HD.(i guess this happens cause of the constant read write...)

Compressed?
Now, that adds too much system overhead ne?
Besides, who has so much data to move from one place to another? :D

no soo much system overhead... cause this is compression/decompression built in to the kernel as kernel modules... so its on the fly... and not soo slow....
like if u are gonna use that as ur system, u will need that mem... it depends though...

Yes, it won't be that slow because the CPU is always faster than the flash drives (but depends on the compression algorithms and the level of compression). But can the compression in the file system make so much of a difference? 100%???
The_Ace
03-30-2007, 10:12 AM
definetly not 100% Infact compression systems like these are not recommented for normal installations. They are meant for special cases like Live CD or Live USB envornments.
Main reason is that you cannot practically use a system with 100% compressed HDD. FOr example, if you have a 40GB HDD compressed to hold 80GB, then yo must have AT LEAST 80GB free memory to expand that HDD. Otherwise you're gonna crash your system. The Live CDs uses a special technique where only wanted programs are extracted in to memory but that can only be used if at the end of the day, the amount of data that is compressed remains the same. That's why live CDs cannot store new data or even changes you do over reboots.

a liveCD(lets take it as 750MBs...) can have a compressed file system of more than twice the size of it self.. it works by extracting only the needed data to the RAM... all the linux live CDs use number compressed files systems...
