Two people were killed and 17 injured when two light aircraft attacked the air base, government officials said.

The international airport - which was not damaged - has been closed and passengers led to shelter.

Tiger rebels attacked the airport and base in 2001, killing 18 and wiping out half of the national airline fleet.

A statement from the Tamil Tiger rebel group, carried by TamilNet, claimed responsibility for the attack on the Katunayake base, which is 30km (20 miles) north of the capital, Colombo.

I heard a large thud and we all went to the window - there was a long silence and then several more explosions followed by machine gun fire
British eyewitness, Neil Butler

The group said two aircraft were used in the bombing and both planes returned to rebel-held territory safely after the attack.

"It is not only pre-emptive, it is a measure to protect Tamil civilians from the genocidal aerial bombardments by Sri Lankan armed forces. More attacks of the same nature will follow," Reuters news agency quoted a rebel Tigers' spokesman as saying.

[TamilNet, Sunday, 25 March 2007, 20:06 GMT]
Two attack air-crafts belonging to Liberation Tigers carried out bombing raids at the Sri Lanka Air Force airbase at Katunayake at 12:45 a.m. early morning Monday and returned safely to Vanni, military spokesperson of the LTTE, Rasaiah Ilanthiraiyan told TamilNet. The targets for the air attack were the SLAF's Kfir and MiG-27 hangers at the military base located adjoining the Katunayake International Airport (KIA), Ilanthiraiyan said. Meanwhile, military officials in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo said 3 Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) personnel were killed and 15 wounded in the attack. Damn it man! Our air force fighters just let them go away??? Wasnt any of our air craft's in the air @ dat time?? Couldnt they have scrambled and bought those two air crafts down??? I knew that these people will some day attack from sky! Now no where is protected. Now Mr. President should consider setting up some SAM(Surface-to-Air-Missles) sites near his house. Im serious! If they could attack our air base from AIR?? Where else cant they attack???
