Well, it's not the fault of the ripper (at least, most of the time). You need a fast CPU for video encoding. If one program is faster than the other, then it might definitely mean that the faster program is outputting low quality video than the other. Whether or not you can notice it, I don't know. There are certain algorithms in codecs that might give 0 to unnoticeable quality gain or compression, which will eat up a lot of CPU cycles though. If a video encoding software uses these by default, it might take a helluva lot of time.

you can try MediaFork. it converts DVDs in to 3GP or MP4. Quite fast too.

Hey, just found out that renaming a vob file to an mpg file works. But what sort of thing are you looking to do? Just convert it or make the filesize smaller or convert a small portion of the video or what?

Renaming will work as long as you have the proper codecs installed. Otherwise it wont work.
