advances in the East and secured Kokkadicholai, one of LTTE's nerve centers, to the south of Batticaloa and Unnachchi under their control. Troops were able to catch a large haul of claymore mines, land mines, anti-personnel mines, improvised explosive devices, guns and other warlike items that had been hurriedly left behind by fleeing Tiger terrorists in the face of advancing troops. Troops now consolidating the surrounding areas came across an air-conditioned luxurious LTTE conference hall with most modern facilities, which was built in a secrecy and used as their main centre of activities.
This huge LTTE conference hall that would have cost millions contains a spacious auditorium, air-conditioned bedrooms, electricity-run kitchen units, pantries, washrooms and other modern equipment. In the most recent past Tiger terrorists conducted media briefings in this building for both local and international media.
An LTTE hideout for production of illicit liquor for distribution to the whole of Batticaloa district, near Kokkadicholai junction too fell into the hands of advancing troops. The liquor distribution has been a local money-spinner to the LTTE.
Tiger terrorists used Kokkadicholai area to launch of artillery attacks, including the recent one on diplomats and Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe when they landed in Weber Stadium. Italian and US ambassadors received injuries in the attack.
With the fall of Kokkadicholai, troops have regained the control in the areas to the south and west of Batticalos town and surrounding areas after driving terrorists off the area.
Engineer troops of the Army in coordination with civil authorities are now busy repairing major infrastructure facilities in newly liberated areas including the restoration of damaged houses and public places.
