Mihin Lanka commences air operations

he 'Mihin Lanka' Airlines yesterday had its inaugural flight to Bodhgaya carrying 165 passengers.

The A320 type aircraft which left Katunayake in the morning, landed at the Bodhgaya Airport around noon. It returned to Colombo the same evening.
The flight comprised with members of the 'Maha Sangha', a group of senior officials and media personnel. Ministers Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, Mervyn Silva, Milinda Moragoda, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, many government officials including Provincial Councillors, Pradeshiya Sabha Members also joined the tour.

Mihin Lanka is a fully government-owned, limited liability company. It is brought up under the concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to provide an indigenous, budget airline benefiting the Sri Lankans yearning to go on pilgrimages, Sri Lankan expatriate community working in the Middle-East etc. It will provide air transport at a significantly reduced and affordable range of fares. It plans in essence, to provide a low cost airline, for the provision of air services to the public at competitive prices.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Sri Lanka had earlier issued an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and the other operational specifications and Airline Licences to Mihin Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.

The airline had carried out a demonstration to the CAA by operating a proving flight on March 4, from Colombo to Trivendrum in India and back, certifying that they are competent and capable of mobilising the identified personnel and the resources, for the conduct of the intended services as prescribed in the documents submitted to the CAA.
The A320 aircraft which has been leased from BU Air of Sofia, Bulgaria, will be utilised within the initial phases of commercial operations.
