Leader of the Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party Ranil Wickremasinghe today said the government's Central Bank is planning to sell the gold reserves in the country to a private company to pay off the debts.
The opposition leader said the cash-strapped government is preparing to secretly sell the 37 metric tons of gold holdings valued at about 14 billion rupees without the approval or the knowledge of the Cabinet.
The government is selling the reserves in the Treasury to pay the debts to the banks and other financial institutions, Wickremasinghe said.
However, the Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal denied the allegations made by the opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe as a deliberate lie.
