Jayasuriya set to join Sachin as most capped ODI player

By Tushar Trivedi

1. This is the third ODI to be played at the Providence Stadium, Guyana.

2. England beat Ireland by 48 runs in the last match played over here on March 30.

3. West Indies and Sri Lanka have played each other 42 times in ODIs but only Brian Lara has scored over 1000 runs in the contest between these two sides. For Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya has scored 807 runs in 29 matches so far.

4. This will be Sanath Jayasuriya’s 384th ODI. Thus he will equal the record for most ODI appearances. Sachin Tendulkar has also played 384.

5. If Jayasuriya concedes 7 runs in this match, he will become the second bowler to have given away more than 800 runs against West Indies after Muttiah Muralitharan (813). Courtney Walsh has conceded 673 runs (most for West Indies Vs Sri Lanka).

6. If Jayasuriya bowls 52 balls, he will become the 3rd bowler to have bowled 1000 balls in WI-SL ODIs. Muttiah Muralitharan (1317) and Courtney Walsh (1108) are the other two.

7. Russel Arnold of Sri Lanka needs 92 runs to complete 4000 runs in ODI. He has scored 3908 runs in 173 matches at an average of 35.85.

8. Jerome Taylor requires three wickets to complete 50 wickets in ODIs. He has taken 47 wickets in 32 matches so far.

9. Kumar Sangakkara needs one stumping to reach the 50 stumpings mark in his ODI career.

SWOT - Sri Lanka vs West Indies

SWOT - Sri Lanka

Strengths: A team with tremendous self-belief and hunger, the Sri Lankan batting is in the safe hands of Jayasuriya, Tharanga, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Silva and Dilshan. Muralidaran remains the world's best spinner. Malinga has emerged as their most potent weapon, who can change the match in an over.

Weaknesses: Relatively few, but Sri Lankan batsmen have exhibited trouble coping with constant pressure, as the South Africans revealed.

Opportunities: Winning this one and possibly another against one of the A teams will book Lanka a semis spot, if they can overwhelm Ireland.

Threats: West Indies always play well when their backs are to the wall.

SWOT - West Indies

Strengths: Lara remains the greatest inspiration and strength. Paceman Darren Powell has struck in his opening spell throughout ICC CWC 2007. Sarwan and Samuels are showing positive signs.

Weaknesses: Gayle is just not firing, the middle order crumbles at the first sign of pressure and bowlers don't seem to back each other. Amidst all this, Lara's under fire for his strategy and tactics.

Opportunities: West Indies have had a poor start to the Super Eights, losing both their matches. If they win this one, they're in the running again for a semis spot.

Threats: Sri Lankans are in awesome form and are very hard to kill. If West Indies slip initially, they will find themselves on a slippery slope.

Update:The weather man at Guyana does not have the best of news for us. We had quite a bit of rain here early in the morning and even on the last night. The conditions are dark and the covers are on for safety measures. It is very overcast here in the middle. What we can do the most is pray that the clouds clear away.

Don't worry guys There's a extra day tomorrow if the game couldn't be completed.. But the thing is if it get reduced to 20ovs like yesterday then it turns out to be a typical 20/20 game.. thats not good because it doesn't bring out the true atmosphere of a one day game.. Its only the wild swings of the bat will result in the final outcome.. :(

Good news! There will be a toss in five minutes (9.45am local time) and play will get underway at 10.15am. Hope you've all got two watches for these different time zones (unless you're in the Caribbean time zone anyway, or you're working in a city broker's right now. On a Sunday would be very impressive, or silly perhaps)

OVER 5.2 - Malinga to Gayle, OUT, done by the slower ball. it was wide of off stump as well and so he had to reach to drive, the ball went a long way up and Fernando, who was circling under the swirling ball as it descended from the heavens, held a good two-handed catch above his head two-thirds of the way towards the long-on boundary

9.6 Fernando to Chanderpaul, no run, the ball flies over the top of off stump, left alone on length by Chanderpaul
9.5 Fernando to Chanderpaul, no run, virtual yorker, Chanderpaul down on it well, the ball races to backward point and knocks the man over as he stops it
9.4 Fernando to Chanderpaul, no run, well-timed clip off his legs, but straight to midwicket. A yard either side and he might have got four there, he hit it so well
9.3 Fernando to Chanderpaul, no run, crisp drive behind square and well stopped
9.2 Fernando to Chanderpaul, no run, that had some extra oomph - 89mph - and Chanderpaul leaves it as it shoots past his off stump
9.1 Fernando to Chanderpaul, no run, fullish length, Chanderpaul defends with ease

OVER 10.1 - Vaas to Lara, OUT, Lara falls! That's some quick work by Sangakkara, Lara dragging his back foot forward and his foot is in the air. The third umpire needed more than a second eye for that one, but he was clearly out, and Lara's on his way. Tidy work indeed from the keeper, standing up to Vaas. Boos ring out around the ground at that decision, but you can't argue with it

11.5 Fernando to Sarwan, no run, defended down
Boos in the crowd there, they didn't like that appeal
11.4 Fernando to Sarwan, no run, half appeal for one which was going over
11.3 Fernando to Sarwan, no run, on off and that's prodded down into the covers
11.2 Fernando to Sarwan, no run, more tidy defence. That's not going to help the run rate, which is steadily creeping up - it's now 6.8
11.1 Fernando to Sarwan, no run, short, and on off, and that's defended down off the back foot

12.5 Vaas to Chanderpaul, no run, outside off and that's defended down off the back foot
12.4 Vaas to Sarwan, 1 run, outside off and that's cut away inside the cover boundary
12.3 Vaas to Sarwan, no run, straight again, much like a non-loaded die, and that's defended once more
12.2 Vaas to Chanderpaul, 1 run, that one's straight and it's nurdled off the front foot behind square

13.3 Fernando to Sarwan, 1 run, short, outside off and that's cut away down to third man off the back foot
13.2 Fernando to Sarwan, no run, defended forward
Murali's just leaving the field - he was one of those who did the fielding well, and he ran on into the hoards. Panic ye not, though - it doesn't look at all serious
13.1 Fernando to Sarwan, 2 runs, outside off and that's driven away off the back foot through the covers on the up, but there's some tidy relay fielding inside the boundary

14.6 Vaas to Sarwan, no run, a loud, long, but ultimately fruitless appeal for one which would have gone over
14.5 Vaas to Chanderpaul, 1 run, on off and that's driven to mid-on and that would have been close had he have hit
14.4 Vaas to Chanderpaul, no run, defended forward
