The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) invites all Sri Lankan rugby players residing overseas to make a beeline to the sport’s local governing body with a view to representing their country (National Team) at international tournaments in 2006/07.
The criteria which prospective players need to adhere to according to International Rugby Board (IRB) rules and regulations, will be as follows-
1-He must be born in Sri Lanka or
2-One parent or grandparent has to be born in Sri Lanka or
3-He has completed thirty six successive months of residence immediately preceding the time of playing etc.
This is also an effort to fall in line with other big time rugby playing nations such as Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa to name a few, who field players under the above eligibility rule in their 15-a-side and Sevens teams because of qualification through either residency or ancestry.
The SLRFU international rugby calendar for 2006, sees the country’s Sevens team competing at the Hong Kong Sevens on March 31 and April 1 and 2, while the 15-a-side team will go head to head with China and Hong Kong on April 29 and May 14 respectively, during the next round of the 2007 Rugby World Cup (RWC) Asian Qualifiers.
They will then prepare to host Asia’s showpiece rugby tournament the 19th edition also known as Rugby Asiad in November, and all aspiring Sri Lankan rugby players abroad are hereby advised to contact the Executive Director of SLRFU, Dilroy Fernando on [email protected]
