The Government requests the public to be cautious during festive season
7 Apr 2007 - 12:15
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a nationwide cultural event common to both Sinhalese and Tamils. It is also a festive period that fosters goodwill and national consciousness among Sri Lankans.
However the Government wishes to caution the general public of possible LTTE attempts to disrupt the festivities and the goodwill between the people in the backdrop of military set backs suffered by them in the North and East.
The LTTE, in the face of imminent defeat in the North and East, has stepped up cowardly terror attacks against civilians. With today's (07th April 2007) claymore mine attack against a passenger bus in Vavuniya, the total number of civilians killed and injured by the LTTE for the month of April has risen to 33 and 55 respectively.
Therefore, the Government is requesting the general public to be cautious of suspicious persons or activities especially at crowded places, inside buses and trains during the upcoming festive season.
The general public can contact the following emergency numbers or visit the closest Police station or Army, Navy, Air Force camps to report any suspicious person or activity.
