Wt wud u think abt the language education we were given at school both in terms of Sinhala and English languages ?

Aren't we better in our second language (English) than in the first (Sinhalese) ?
- If so, can we say something's seriously wrong somewhere in the system?
- If not, shud we say that English wil hav to be focused more in our education system?

My mother tongue is Sinhalese and was educated in Sinhala medium too.

I agree with u Chamith, yet don't u feel that we find it so difficult to express ourselves in Sinhalese most of the time? Despite being blessed with such a powerful, overwhelmingly rich language we've become slaves of a foreign language due to certain circumstances... PATHETIC !!!

can we really take that for granted amali, as each and every lang exists on earth does have this salient feature...

wt i'm saying is, we've been trained in such a way that we spontaneously get into English rather than into Sinhalese more often even in quite informal, friendly chats like this with or without noticing it, cos we are convenient with it by now ....

there is a silent communication system with human/animals.. which is more powerful than language communication..

but in the modern world we have to communicate with lot of ppl ...language is use not only to share our feelings & ideas ..language is important 4 business.. hmmm what else .... (i'll keep blank) ... Ect..

it links with lot of areas.. in that case English use as the key language .. basic reason most ppl use English in modern world & lot of ppl can understand as well..

but there are countries like japan which mostly (99%) produce there human needs by there own.. so need of English language is not really necessary for them

but a country like sl mostly depends on other countries ... we should import stuff we should export stuff ... 4 all this a language require which can understand by both parties..

main time most sl companies link with overseas companies ... thats a reason to give #1 to English knowledge..

The education system is crap. And we aren't better in English than our 1st language. And ya they should emphasize the importance of English. The education given about Sinhala language is fair enough (though most of them struggle with "sahithya" part)
And the bottom line of a language is that its a method of communication. So u can't really say that we have become slaves of the English.
